I have heard only one full length non sabha kutcheri -private concert of Ganesh Kumaresh in one opportunity 6 years back. 2 concerts I heard their last half an hour as they preceded an evening concert . This is my first concert that I am listening in full in a kutcheri sabha setting.

Mylapore BVB generally has a lot of crowd . The departed CHO's Enge Brahmanan crowd is around the mylapore tank . It is still there to fill up and to an extent with the cancellation of NGS concert that must have bought more crowd to the brothers. Also the concert is free, one can see the really restless crowd at 8pm melting even before the tani is on-this is the core bastion of mylapore rasikas.

The brothers started with atana .Ganesh had a more silky and restrained tone whereas kumaresh gave more thicker and bass heavy tone . The contrast was striking and when Ganesh played atana alapana I enjoyed it . I am not sure which krithi they took . Is the krithi their own or is it one of those JC wodeyar atana drops where my memory temporarily faded yesterday. The atana questioning bhavam was there and they did a great start with the rollicking support of two extraordinary percussion artists.

Naga Swirl he was really showcased in a swirling fashion. I am assuming that the raga and krithi of shri pathe is what they played . Great swara patterns where the two brothers really synchronized well . One could easily spot their approach was always showcasing on the capability of the divine vadhyam and not really squatting on the krithi vocalesque rendition.

The standard submain alapana was poorvikalyani , it was played by Kumaresh . I felt kumaresh was taking little excessive pauses and was kind of bit micromanaging on the hyper side the sound adjustment . The usually strong poorvikalyani was suddenly showcased as a vocal concert with Ganesh singing the song . I donot know why he sang the pallavi and till half point of anupallavi , he sang. Is the krithi a dikshitar krithi . It is not that Ganesh sang badly and it is not that Ganesh sang exceptionally well , but as such the violin divinity was bit disturbed by their vocal exuberance . Towards the second half of the swaras the strong poorvikalyani became a detoured and bit lost poorvikalyani . For few sangathis kumaresh turned the violin about 45 degrees and gave a tromborne like effect , the baluswamy violin successful import of violin became a vivaldi/mozart light export .

With the poorvikalyani muse getting curtailed with their violin imports , kumaresh addressed the audience and gave a short speech to the three departed souls-Dr BMK, Dr J J and Cho . Understandably with that speech , the immortal saramathi and mokshamu followed . THe alapana was well done by Ganesh .The texture of saramathi was strictly contemplative with a nice violin tone and their continuous bowing impressed me a lot . The immortal krithi mokshamu galadaA of T with saramathi muse was nice and i liked their non tampering play of sangathis . Swaras were well rotated and towards the end there was this touch of filmy like orchestration . I guess all that is part of their thrill.

The karpagavalli a popular krithi of TMS and was most popular in my school days as every one thought then they knew CM when they sang . The karpagavalli was well received as much as a mylapore keerai vadai special. They did not play exactly in slower fashion as this ragamaliga krithi demands. Their love for speed did sacrifice a tiny bit the yazhpaanam veeeramani special bhaavam - atleast the ananda bhairavi sangathis could have had a little more konjal

Their tail thukkadas had a key message -I am done with the concert and I am looking forward for 9pm .Apart from bhagyada and hariharasanam . The intermediate O rama krithi of bhadrachalam ramadas, Ganesh again sang the whole krithi with kumaresh playing a folky support for nadanamakriya ???. The last was a quick medley chinese soup and they faithfully closed 5 mins before 9pm. I personally felt with the saramathi muse reaching my senses intensely ,they could have gone bit more showcasing their intense synchronization centered on more carnatic idioms.

The percussion team was superb . Anantha has speed and the fast sangathis from brothers were excellently supported by the mrudhu angam of anantha . The usually joyful Dr Karthick continued to show his class with his taps in ghatam . Their tani was well done .The tani and saramathi were my top picks

Ganesh Kumaresh have excellent control with their instrument . But i guess there is at times a heavy manaseega influence of kunnakudi vaidyanathan. I am pretty sure their concert will be wonderful if they play consciously few slower numbers or not race with at times in their 5th gear play. The percussion team of Ananta and karthick were consistent and lovely. I would have enjoyed it bit more if Ganesh and Kumaresh had played bit more or they could have brought in little less pompous approach in those sporadic intervals. Their talent was more latent in this concert.

Overall a very good concert for 1 hour and 50 minutes.
