I thought I was late to the 06:30 pm concert .As i entered at 06:45 pm, I was early as the concert started at 7pm. It is atleast 5 or 6 years since I heard TVS sang a full length live concert . The concert had its pockets of excellence . Incidentally in this concert there was a lot of airtime given to mahadevan it can be christened almost like a near RG sisters concert

vidwan TVS is surely one of the most open throated singers and I love open throated singing . He started with the alapana and jumped into sudda bangala krithi- Rama bhakthi sAmrAjyam. The violin touch was nice and mrudangam had a little less cohesion . tvs swaras were in the usual sarvalaghu and it gave a good but not a great start . The next atana was not fleshed that well the atana raga swaroopam was bit abrasive and I appreciated the quick closure- one of the low key renditions of this concert.

Vasantha alapana was nice , the brigas in second half was nice and tvs followed with a nice rendition of seethamma mAyamma. His style of at times alapanizing the krithis was there and it continued for almost most part of his concert. Swaras in vasanta were expansive and I liked it.

The next was the more assertive shanmughapriya . His voice gave the best curves of shanmughapriya during pockets of alapana . His krithi rendition was well done and there was a lot of rotation with accompanists . The swaras in shanmughapriya were sung with his usual joy and I liked the koraippu part.

Sevikka vendum ayya alapana and krithi was done okay , the cohesion was bit light in the swaras . The alapana of shankarabharanam was rushed no meditative hues he sang so quickly and sticked with limited panoramic view. The krithi like alapana was bit hackneyed but in swaras after the customary ga ma pa mA pA, his second half had lovely ideas. I felt he could have distilled a better shankarabharanam.

TVS sings viruththam with a nice throw and finesse . The best was the detailed viruththam of divya prabhadham, karpooram nArumO had a Desh fire and akalakkile had the hamsAnandi fire. Nice raga anubhavam reached me in both the viruththam parts and as expected he ended with his signature krithi srinivasa tiruvenkata . I like this krithi in general and i lapped it up. The second viruththam nanmaiyum started well in sindhu bhairavi but the second half was bit way too animated with too much of rama rama rama and prabho prabho prabho touchpoints . As expected the swati gem vishweswara was sung .

Mahadevan had kept the volume right , it was not a case of the usual sound setting where sound for accompanying artist will either be kept low or where the supporting vocalist sings away from Microphone. From the last time I heard , there is improvement ,looking forward to hear him. Mahadevan adapts little less of TVS unlike his sister Amrutha sankaranarayanan who adapts much more of TVS. I did hear the last 15 mins of Amrutha in another concert before Pantula rama .This school MMI-TVS-RSP has very limited performers in each era . I wish the siblings more success as i adore MMI school.

VVS murari had a nice flow for most part and his bow was never intrusive . He found it bit difficult to adjust in the swara pattern during return for the last segment of shanmughapriya , where TVS style was bit asymmetrical when compared to mahadevan patterns. The percussion team played well , mannargudi easwaran mrudangam was not appearing as a shruthi vadhyam for the first 30 minutes or so but later he was in his lovely ease varEn zone . THe kanjira artist S venkataramanan is usually cautious in most places(that is always his style) and he had limited role . Tani was a standard fare, they were great team players with the late 30 mins start they possibly gave more air time . I mainly missed a second neraval or a more detailed shankarabharanam main. For a 200 Rs minimum ticket , I was expecting an RTP like the previous vijaysiva concert , but the compromise of a detailed viruththam in desh and hamsanandi was nice.

Overall a good to very good concert for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Nice,informative review,Rajesh!!!

A question about Karpooram Narumo--I thought it was from the Nachiyar Tirumozhi(I may be splitting hairs here!!!) and I have heard it sung by Sanjay, and some of PSN's disciples, in KAMAS. Is this different or TVS sings it in Desh?

TVS is in his early seventies and still singing with gusto!! I recall when my Father was Secretary of the Shanmukhananda Sabha in Bombay, whenever Ariyakudi sang during the Fifties--he was 60 plus years old at that time- my father and other sycophants of ARI used to laud how the" old " man sings so well at that age!!!! Given the fact that artistes nowadays have the resources and disciplined health choices,no wonder they are able to perform series of concerts in various locations with drastic weather patterns--something the earlier generation of musicians did not have to face.

It is commendable that TVS has maintained his voice and stamina!! More power to his voice and more power to YOUR(Rajesh's) ELBOW or should I say more digital dexterity for you "techies"!!!!

Karpooram Naarumo is very much Nachiyar Tirumozhi. I have heard him sing it as a regular keerthanai as well, in Bangalore. He gives a bhakthi touch in the ending to tone down the moderately erotic paasuram- IMHO.
