Normally, the correct time for tani is after two hours (@ 8.30 here). Here, tani was given at 8.55 PM. Palladam and Alathur could not justify the tani and the rasiKas too could not justify their listening.
Till shanmugapriya it was very good. Papanasam sivan song was rendered very well including exchange of neraval and after that, the problem started.
They took dEshakshi. I thought it was balahamsa, till they clarified and NS, in return played for two minutes, before kriti was started.
Then, they took tOdi. I settled down for a good RTP or a good kriti. Surprisingly, the tOdi rAga alapana was for 3 minutes and violin return for 2 minutes and kritis in next 5 minutes.
Then, KVM RTP started:
I had few questions in my mind ?
Why did they take dEshAkshi first and waste some time on that ?
Why did they take tOdi as a tukkadA rAgam that to a gigantic kriti like dAsharathi. I remember T N Seshagopalan had sung this for an hour.
(Thyagaraja asks in this kriti - How can I repay my debt to you, lord Rama ?. This is not the way, nEdhanUri gAru would have repaid the debt to the Saint ?)
Hence, the tani was pushed @ 9 PM slot !!!
Both the brothers’ voice was not the best on that day. In between, they paused for some time. May be tOdi was relatively tougher than KVM. In that case, they could have dropped tOdi.
I have not heard MBs taking big 5 rAgas as RtP. Even, in MA, they had taken Dwijavanthi as RTP.
Not proper planning in a reputed sabhA is not good for the matured artists like MBs.
Violin and Tani were at their best.
The climax was, they took a book and opened a page. I thought they are going to sing another kriti. One of the duo started "shankarachaya...... mangalam.
They are the only artists who sing mangalam, referring the book !!!!

I dont see anything wrong in singing thodi for just 2 minutes. There are many concerts where a main kriti is sung without a raga alapana.
Artists are not machines to sing consistently day in and day out.
Is it not so easy to be critical !!
give the artists their space to perform.

There is a recording of KVN where he sang this particular thodi kriti without alapana, neraval or swarams. Is sankaracharya mangalam pavamana or is it new?? Singing without referring books looks nice but we might have to consider the kind of effort musicians put in presenting new kritis. I was kind of critical when I see musicians looking at notes, but I thought otherwise and stopped cribbing. Music is not a movie. We can close eyes and listen as well.
