There is always an overdose of sensationalism that has come in media these days. For the artists in December season there is a battle that each of them fight . The two sides of the battle is to either have a real promotion or paid promotion in media. The reach of rasikas eyeballs in visual and print media is more necessary than the mallleaus incus and stapes of the inner ear. I would not know the difference in one pass between real promotion and a paid promotion but a little longer analysis of reading regular repeated writeups in the hindu, times of india, internet media, rasikas.org(Oh sure), schedules of artists etc, associating names and knowing the groupism of artists and sabhas have taken a share of my own attention and I can nearly and accurately guess the difference . For carnatic musicians the trajectory of margazhi is best when it starts in visual varnam . The visual varnam is having a say in words in Jaya TV or Vijay TV in early december and to follow up from there on . Their constant tampura is their facebook posts that gets constantly bumped ranging from brisk and nice writeups to the laziest thumbsup like.

About 4 or 5 months back when some one mentioned that Trichy Ganesan passed away , I heard his music in one recording . He was like a manakkal Rangarajan Jr. Thanks to rasikas.org when sranjani of pozhichalur wrote a review . THen when I attended the concert of G Abhilash and asked him about Thoppur Sairam , he said romba romba antha kalathu singer mAri romba nalla padrAr was his feedback . Word of mouth especially when told with a very unadulterated zero sensationalism is what I seek with this divine carnatic music and who else is best than a musician and organizer to tell about Sairam from Thoppur.

Thoppur Sairam did not sing exactly in that breakneck manakkal rangarajan or Trichy ganesan speed . But he sang with the idioms of definitely antha kalathu musician. Every anthakalathu musician is not my liking and I am certainly not downgrading many of the great young/old and upcoming/already come up musicians of today. But the search for me is that sub conscious feel of well grounded carnatic idioms .Those idioms is at the intersect of not appealing with a light sangathi which should not get thrown here and there is one thing where only weighty sangathis have to be poured. The other thing is to be continously be fueled by a great voice throw. So Pour and Throw is the key to enjoy CM.

ThrowPour Sairam started with a wonderful kAmbOdhi - varnams are well rehearsed but if the audio setting is perfect you enjoy more .This SKGS Mini Hall is a lovely sabha , those who paid 50 to hear are minimal but it is a joy to be there in this lovely bose stereo hall. What a lovely sahana with shree vathApi. I have tasted with the two maharajapurams the most with this sahana shree vAthApi of sivan. In the celestial world of serene sahana , there is one krithi ee vasudha which is sung in a bit racy fashion- it stands out with all the rest of sahanas . Throwpour poured and threw with lovely sahana, the word split and assertion in some key words like PerumAle was realy PERUMALE and the phrases like thiruvilayadal sei and a tiruvarur valar - he had the underlying drama enacted with the muse of music only being the syrup.

I am not a big fan of lathangi - i feel it is in the crossroads of round off error of either a pantuvarali or a kalyani . His rendition was neat with a lot of lakshana anchors . I dont think i have ever heard this guruguha mudra krithi of lathangi . I liked his rendition and swaras were well done.
. Is this krithi a real dikshitar krithi or is it a spurious one that has guruguha mudra that maharajapuram vishwanatha iyer or some one in that era hijacked it that way. May i know who else sings this sAdujana vinutham (I am assuming some one like ravisri or keerthi will give more pointers with sAdhujana vinutham in latangi)??

A lovely chalanattai followed ,the vivadhi did not have any vivadhi dosham and I liked his rendition. The cute anandabhairavi had a gnb like racy anchor and i loved the rendition of kAppaduvE uNadu bhaaram.Thamizh is so tasty in this lovely krithi in this ahah anandabhairavi. I think i heard this once before with abhishek in besant nagar, this anandabhairavi with few rounds of cittaswaras and the lines are so lovely even if you understand even sketchy thamizh.

Madhyamavati throw was lovely . He was really roaring there a bit like his guru and perhaps his guru's manasiga mentor manakkal. The palimsu kamakshi is always a winner in madhyamavati krithis . In this season for the few concerts that I attended i was praying for that but i had got the sivan saravana bhavanE in two occassions as main. The neraval was neat and the throw was lovely

His rava sareeram continued wonderfully with the garland of minor bharathis. He made me think i was in raja annamalai thamizh manram . The first gopalakrishna bharathi had a lovely kapi muse thillai thillai enral with lovely words and enunciation made kapi taste as though it was the early morning freshly made filter coffee. THe irakkam varAmal was another lovely touch , the last best irakkam varamal that I recollected was from TM krishna many many years ago . Suddananda bharathi dose was also great another lovely throw poured with his lovely thamizh diction . When he sings thamizh thukkada songs he just reminds me of the late sethalapathi balu mama -he pours with emotion and he has a real real strong voice. That testimony of sethalapathi was most appropriate with his ramanai bhajithal in maand.

The last sai bhajan had a revathish touch and I did not like it , he suddenly became another boring vidwan with light sangathis. VL sudharsan cautiously played for most of the madhyamakAla touches , there was a bit of screetch in higher notes . This is the first time i am hearing VL Sudharsan. Umayalpuram mAli has nice naadham and he really lifted the concert. He has great feel for lyrics . The disciple H Prasanna- was nearly like his guru ghatam suresh very responsive play. I had to walk out during tani

At the end of the concert i assumed he would go back to trichy. Umayalpuram mali said he was once working in Madurai and now he has settled in chennai. But he has to be noticed more - vidwat is there , marketability long way to go - best wishes for his pour and throw (visual and print media reach) for sairam???

Thoppur Sairam has a real steadfast approach in singing exactly like how the previous era musicians sing . He was concentrating on fundamentals - throw of the voice was the vehicle and he was not interspersing with any filmi or light touches . Most importantly along with steady brigas there was also a bit of flat notes at times to give more speed and appreciate his throw. He was a combo of say a Shertalai ranganatha sharma and a bangalore shankar if i can approximate to bit of knowns . Looking forward to surely hear him again, I wish I hear him sing an RTP soon in my 2nd concert of his.The year 2017 was a great start with throwpour.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 10 minutes.
