Our friend Shyam kalyanasundaram who writes with the id mantra is now really actively active with Carnatic Music. He and his appa were passively active when they gave their house in LakeArea, Nungambakkam and we conducted lot of rasayana concerts championed by coolkarni. Shyam is having his maiden concert tomorrow at raga sudha. He is the student of vidwan Manoj Siva and let us wish him mantra balam and also blessing from mahavidwan Palakkkad Raghu

we conducted lot of rasayana concerts championed by coolkarni.

There are recent murmurs that we should start again. People interested , local or outstation or overseas can confirm here .It takes two to share the cost of one concert . Contributing members can have a say in choice of artist subject to other constraints.

If I see the critical size here , I can take things forward .Needless to add we have three laya vidwans among our members ,who can play for as little as .....
Shyam has always contributed the food part on his own.
If the critical size gets bigger we could think of owning our simple mike system fit enough for a small drawing room
Traditionally mike costs are 6000/concert which can be worked out in a different way .
Responses Welcome , though I am not the forced I once used to be in these matters . All that I can say is that
the venue is great
hosts are top class .

Did any one attend this (I am assuming varsha and nick may have made it) ? Can we have some first hand reports on this?

Well attended function . Smooth with Short speeches.
Very good singing and violin accompaniment.
Star of the day Shyam looked nervous but was probably not .
Manoj Siva exuded warmth like only he can do .RK Sriramkumar and Trichur Narendran spoke very aptly .Most of it centred around advice for the new generation on the aspects of a long journey in Music .Neyveli Santhanagopalan was there too .
Shyams brother brought the family end of the story up.

The vocalist did tickle me with his Akshayalinga vibho .

The musical couching at
navanīta hṛdaya vibhāta tumburu saṅgīta
did give evidence of a pedigree coaching under Vijaysiva .He did not race through that zone and made me take more looks at the passage of words there .A heart full to the brim and spilling over .
Music thus expounded at its simplest , and as envisioned by VijaySiva & Co is what brings the temple to the concert arena.

As with all the best mridangam arangetrams, it was a regular concert.

There was no pomp or ceremony, and certainly no hiking of the mridangam volume, as happens at some of these functions. I don't think that Manoj Siva has any interest at all in the hyping of ego (either student or guru) that can sometimes be seen. Manoj Siva, apart from speaking and giving some help at one point in the concert, was just a regular audience member, just as Mantra was just a regular mridangist, who simply did the job of accompanying. All of this I was pleased to see and enjoyed very much . Well done, and well played, Mantra and, as ever, respects to your guru, one of my favourite mridangists.
