Re: Sankranti Music Festival @ SRLKM
Learning how to squander.
Given the rather crowded phalanx of artistes (particularly young ones yet to fully establish themselves) that is at the vanguard of Carnatic music today, squandering an opportunity to perform in front of a discerning audience is sacrilege; yet that is exactly what a bunch of youngsters did at the recent YUVA festival organised by Sri Rama Lalita Kala Mandira.
The line up was quite star studded. A master in his own right ... Sikkil Gurucharan; Old gun on the circuit, but new to Bangalore - AS Murali; Debutant Mahadevan ShankarNarayanan; The 3 generation Trio on Violin; and another artist on Debut season at bangalore - Dr. Padma Sugavanam.
All the artists had full 3 hours each to show their potential and make a mark on the rasikas of Bangalore. Except for Junior Shankarnarayanan, the other 3 vocalists squandered the opportunity through a mediocre performance.
The full 3 hours slot was used by none, non co-operative voice adding issue with one of them, missing pre concert dicussion to sing a RTP with the other and at last but not the least, peeping into lyrics even for a tried and tested kriti, dropped my thrill of following up my Chennai season attendance.
But while whatever that was presented was aesthetically crystal clear, I left each of the concerts wanting more and in a dissapointed mood.
It's a coincidence, writing this review on the birthday of one of bangalore's most famous and favoured sons was born. The most popular meme on THE WALL which I have come across goes "when your name is Rahul, make it Dravid and not Gandhi!"
Sad to see a bunch of Rahul's move the Gandhian way.....

Re: Sankranti Music Festival @ SRLKM
Badari,
Your comment about artistes "not choosing their shots wisely and thus squandering away their chances" is a rasika's pointer to the importance of the SRLKM fest.
I had too many things going on personally to attend a full concert. But I breezed in and out for 20 min or so during Ms Sankari Krishnan's concert. I enjoyed the ambiance of the colourful shamiana auditorium, somehow fully insulated from street sounds and mosquitoes. The audio system was quite acceptable. Her rendition of Anandabhairavi "Kamalamba Samrakshatu" was enjoyable. Ranjani Venkatesh was on the mridangam.

Re: Sankranti Music Festival @ SRLKM
Wish I had more free time for music. Could attend only half of the concert in the series
Badari,
Wish I had stayed on for the RTP at the violin Trio of three generations-concert.I had to leave after tAni.
The violins sang, I would say--especially in enta muddO, enta sogasO and janani ninnu vinA.
I was hoping to see Bhagwan who is keen on violin concerts. Sachi, wish we had met. Badari, I'm glad we could meet
When a dozen people in the audience grew to a hundred or so, I was happy. Chennai perhaps doesn't draw a crowd like this for instruments?
I was early, and was happy to speak to H.N.Bhaskar. He has played for Suryaprakash in his engirundO vandAi CD (Arasi Vol: 4).
