DrMNarmadha violin solo at National Program,Tiruvaiyaru on 14.1.17 at the 170th Tyagaraja Aaradana.

Post by jananinarayanan »

This program is very special as this was a live broadcast in the National Program of All India Radio.

A mesmerising Abheri {Nagumomu}was the main piece.
Dr.Narmadha's total control and grip was extraordinary and I felt that Nagumomu Ganaleni was a top nautch performance.
The audience clapping several times for this Raaga Alapana was demonstrative of her felicity and her versatility scaling all the octaves in the violin.
Indeed a Saranga{NeevadaNegaana } reminded me of the typical legendary MSG Graceful touches.
Sheer golden melody straight to my heart and I was so excited when DrNarmadha rendered Sharashara in Kuntalavarali.
This was a real pep on the tempo.
The violin rendition in entirety was marked by ultimate precision and beautiful choices of the Tyagaraja Krithis which were both traditional and contemporary.
It is admirable that DrNarmadha adheres to tradition in supremacy and also adapts contemporary expressions.
Here is the link of the concert.

Mannargudi Easwaran gave great support enlivening and enhancing the concert with Madipakkam Suresh on the Ghatam.

Dr. Narmadha's extreme commitment were appreciated by the audience presence of the great Thavil maestro Haridwaramangalam Pazhanivel,Mridangam Maestro Raja Rao and philanthrophist Deccan Moorthy.

Listened to Nagumomu. Good tribute to Sri Thyagaraja and she perhaps had in mind Dr BMK and her father/guru as well when she played that. She played many sangatis that MSS sings.

I WANT TO POINT OUT CERTAIN FEATURES of dr.mn's concert:
A)THE CONCERT WAS AT THE LEVEL OF GOLDEN AGE CONCERTS.
B) SHE PAID TRIBUTE TO ALL THE GREATS IN FOLLOWING THEIR SPECIAL PRAYOGAMS ETC.
C) SHE EQUALLED IF NOT BETTERED MSG'S TECJNICAL EXCELLENCE.
D) EVERY ONE SHD. RECORD THIS CONCERT & LISTEN IN DETAIL THEY WILL REALISE THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE& PERFECTION SHE HAS REACHED.

ITS A PITY HER GENIUS IS NOT BEING PUBLICLY RECOGNISED & RAVED ABOUT TO THE EXTENT SHE DESERVES. I WOULD REQUEST ALL FAIR MINDED PERSONS TO WRITE THEIR SABHS SECRETARIES TO GET OVER THEIR IGNORANT BIASES AGAINST INSTRUMENTALISTS.
BELOW THE DETAILS OF HER CONCERT & THE LOGIC BEHIND THE CHOICES:
All songs
1}Raamanipai Kedaragaula Adi
2} NeevadaNegaana Saranga KhandaChapu
3}SaraSaraSamare Kuntalavarali Adi
4} Nagumomu Abheri Adi.

All songs addressing  the RamaBhakthi in various stages.
1}Raamanipai; Raama as Seetharaama.
2} NeevadaNegaana, Raama as the charming evergreen Lord.
3} Rama as the warrior in SaraSara {Kuntalavarali.
So I choose my own fast tempo with various bowing techniques and strumming.
4}Nagumomu.The plaintive Tyagaraja taking Raama as the Paranormal.
Bhakthi in crescendo.
THE ABHERI ALAPANA IS THE BEST I HAVE HEARD AS SHE TOOK THE BEST FROM MMI, BMK , MSG , MSS & PERFRCTLY EXECUTED THEM....

UNLESS WE RECOGNISE GREATNESS & GENIUS I AM AFRAID AT LEAST THE PREVIOUS GENERATION WILL BE FORCED TO RELIVE THEIR 50'S EXPERIENCES & MISS OUT ON TODAY'S GENIUSES. ITS NOT ENOUGH TO JUST CONGREGATE & PATRONISE THE INTENTIONAL" LOWERING OF STANDARDS BY TODAY'S ARTISTS......VKV

The need for Dr Narmadha being raved about now itself is unfair - given her long stint on senior slots as an accompanist for more than 1-1/2 decades even with what I know - may be longer.

Instrumentalists not being listened to: We forgot the narrative that was underlying the music all along all through the golden era. If Trinity's work is important for Carnatic music to become a full vocation - the one thing that proves that, is instrumental music of all forms - Mridangam included.

And we say ( and expect) they perform in gAyaki style !! because they play the songs?? - how untrue!!?? This is blatant appropriation.

I have heard from senior rasikas on many tyAgarAja kritis' authentic pATAntarams being transmitted via tiruveezhimizhalai brothers - the nAdaswaram vidvans!

What our bones acknowledged subtly for decades - our mind does not accept and acknowledge and with a severe breakdown in rasikatva parampara with CM not being fashionable for a 1/2 generation - that was completely lost.

How many senior musicians would not engage a good senior Mridangist or violinist for want of adequate compensation? We have all heard those stories.

I AM WRITING THIS IN DESPERATION AT THE CHANGES IN ATTITUDE. LGJ, TNK, MSG, MC ETC BECAME VERY WELL KNOWN AS THEY WERE ENCOURAGED TO PLAY SOLOS ON THEIR OWN BY ARI,GNB,MMI,PMI ETC & THEY COULD EXPAND ON THEIR EXPERIENCES AS ACCOMPANISTS. I CONTEND THAT DR.MN WITH ALL HER EXPERIENCE & SKILL HAS NOT YET BEEN RECOGNISED FOR ALL HER SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE. KUNNAKUDI INITIATED HIS OWN STYLE & GOT RAVE REVIEWS. MAY BE SHE SHD. DO THAT & ABANDON THE PARUR BHANI ETC TO SOME EXTENT......

GNB STRICTLY SPLIT HIS PROCEEDS W/LGJ& P.R. MMI ACTUALLY ASKED THE SHANMUGANANDA TO PAY PALANI MORE THAN HIMSELF. ARI TAUGHT SEM HOW TO NEGOTIATE FOR BETTER FEES! I PERSONALLY KNOW OF SCORES OF EXAMPLES LIKE THIS. ON THE OTHER HAND I HAD TO SHARE MY MASALA DOSA IN MURIDIS ETCWITH MY CLOSE FRIEND SSV (AUTHOR OF BATHROOM SINGER) WHEN ALANGUDI WAS GIVEN 5 RS. BY THE MUSIC ACADEMY & YHE HAD TO SPEND 2 RS. FOR AUTO ETC. SO THE BAG IS MIXED....
I AM NOT ANGRY IN WRITING IN CAPS. MAKES IT EASIER FOR ME. PL EXCUSE "LACK" OF ETTIQUETTE. VKV

What a beautiful AbhEri! Dr. Narmada has imbibed not only the technique but the soul of the Parur style.
