Take Sri T.N.Seshagopalan (TNS) in full splendour. Add a youthful voice. Shake well, stir and serve as it is. That is what is Sri T.N.S.Krishna (TNSK) for you. The hier apparent to Sri TNS musical legacy gave a splendid performance today.

The first alapana of the concert was that of raga darbAr which was very skillfully executed by both TNSK and Sri Mysore Srikanth. Then followed the latAngi alapana in which I was given an awesome guided tour. aparAdamula was sung at a fast pace. When the mudhra "venkaTEsha" came in the charanam, TNSK jovially pointed towards the mridangam vidwan Sri (Neyveli) Venkatesh. The song ended with racy kalpana swarams involving good kanakkus at the end.

The next raga alapana was that of mohanam. It was 18 minutes filled with pure ecstasy. I do not have words to describe the beauty of the alapana. Graha bhedam was done with gAndhAram as the base to give hindOLam. Not to be left behind, Sri Mysore V. Srikanth also gave a very beautiful delineation of the raga. What a beautiful rendition of the kriti it was by TNSK !! For sometime, I just felt like Sri TNS himself was sitting there on stage and singing it.

Sri Neyveli Venkatesh played very softly and aptly for all the songs.

I had this feeling of immense satisfaction after listening to the concert. Certainly one of the best concerts I have attended in the past few days. TNSK surely deserves an evening slot in the next season.

Nice review, Ram. Good to see that Sri TNS has groomed his son well and looking forward to hearing more of Sri TNS Krishna's music.

The one TNS has composed has a different pallavi line unless he has a second one in the same rAgA.

Thanks Ram. I missed his academy concert due to some engagements but it is heartening to note that he is making rapid strides and I do pray that he makes it to the senior slots quickly. I'e heard him a few times untill last year and it was clear that he had all the raw material for success at the highest level. The only thing that was missing was a sense of proportion - if he can work on that aspect, the rest will take care of itself.

I believe the thillana has "Sankara dhasan" as mudhra...therefore this would have to be a TNS composition.

I attended another TNSK concert on Dec 13 (I believe it was at Rama Rao Kalyana Mandapam). One thing that struck me was the brilliant choice of viruttam leading to the song. In that concert the main song was "Akshaya Lingha Vibho" (SankarAbharanam, misra cApu, Dikshitar). As prelude, he rendered the first few lines of LingAshtakam. Sang in majestic SankarAbharanam, this was a nice change from the usual lighter commercial recording we hear all the time (which I believe is in Sivaranjani). Apt viruttam selections, rendered with perfect diction is another stamp of his father.

Vijay,

TNSK's academy concert was uninspiring , to say the least. He has a great voice, for sure, and the TNS' stamp was evident, but even then, the concert remained mediocre (at least to me) probably due to the cliched raga selection.

Saveri varnam -Sarasooda
Abhimana- Begada-Patnam
Ninnu vina-Poorvi Kalyani- Shayama Sastri
Kadanuvariki- Todi- Thyagaraja
Shanmukhapriya-????? (probably RTP?)

The saveri varnam was rendered as usual with kalpana swarams at the charanam line. The begada kriti was really well rendered and swaras at the end of it gave an indication of his lineage. But the purivikalyani and todi alapanas were as cliched as one can get and a kriti like kadanuvarikki does not help in lifiting the spirits. The shanmukhapriya alapana seemed to indicate an RTP and I left after the violinst's essay (to make it to the Carnatica Bros' concerts at SPSS). The poorvi kalyani-todi-shanmukhapriya path has been so often tread ,I was expecting something more original from this young man, at least, in his academy concert.

And with Shertalai Shivakumar seemingly content to remain in the sidelines the concert remained below par considering what TNSK is capable of.

Thanks for the update Srinidhi - even if it did not turn out as I had expected....

I hear the young man has just graduated from IIM Lucknow! That is quite an acievement considering his "extra-curricular interests" - but I suppose with those genes it could not have been too hard! However I hope cushy career prospects do not lure him away from CM...
