S.VaradarAjan - violin , mridangam - Trichy Sankaranan, kanjira - BS PurushOtaman

I and my 3 relatives had to spend Rs 400 for listening this concert .There was just only 60 % occupancy, I wish they give more 75 Rs tickets, not push rasikas to upgrade from Rs 50 to Rs 100 tickets .

1.late for KAnadA varnam???
2. rAju vedala (RS,N,S) - tOdi - T
3.hari hara putram (R,S) - vasantA - T
4. sabhapathikku - AbhOgi - GKB

5.akshayalinga (R,N,S,T) - shankarabharanam - MD
6. RTP - reetigowlai + swararAgamaliga swarams
9 minutes of rAgam, 7 minutes of tAnam and 23 minutes of pallavi and swarams
"KAna kidaikumO sabesan darisaname kandal kalitheerumO"

7A. viruttam "agalikke nirayum inru ???" "mmgowlai + bilahari + varAli +sindhubhairavi" - divyaprabhandham -???
7B. nadanda kalgal nOndhavO -sindhubhairavi - tirumAzhisai Azhvar
8. kAna vendAmO - sriranjani - GKB
9. aduvOme palli pAduvOme - folk - subramania bharathi
10. tillana"needu mahima" - pooranchandrika - Poochi
11. nee nAma - sowrashtram - T

Late for the first kAnadA?? , felt kAna vendAmO iru kannirukkum bOde parking problem solve avathai. The tOdi settled very well in the concert with a very good round of swarams. VasantA was simply outstanding with a nice alApanai, the song hariharaputram was sung in a medium tempo and he kept up the same tempo for swarams. I felt he could have gone more to mEl kAla swarams ,because I am very acclimitized to that assertive hari piDi and hurry swaram of SSI.

AbhOgi was emotive.TMK is one of the best vocalist when he renders shankarabharanam .He did live up to his own preset expectation and was fantastic. The swarams and neraval"badari vana moola nAyika" was also excellent. The rAga alApanai of RTP in reetigowlai was not very detailed, just average. tAnam tempo was very good and pallavi was also nice . The swaras were in mOhanam(ok),sahAna (very good) , behAg(good) and in reetigowlai (good).

AbhOgi's close cousin and GKB came again in his usual slow to medium tempo rendering of kAna vendamO in the rAgam shrirAnjani. The folkish (or mANdish??) aduvOme was very good. The tillana was a perfect finish.

Usually varadarAjan plays proportionately to singer(2:3) , but looked today almost 1:1.Perhaps concert being a 3hr and 15 minutes ,that was well planned and intended .Nevertheless his bowing and nAdham were very good.Trichy Sankaran - BSP played a detailed tAni,I noticed TS's kAlapramAnam in vasantha was fast when compared to the medium to slow tempo of TMK(perhaps he may be atleast 50 times more acclimitized to SSI's hariharaputram than me). BSP's kanjira was very good.

There was just one thing where TMK disappointed .THere was just excessive sabhAsh,bale, hmmm gesticulational downpour in tani, prompting my relative to ask "oru velai ivaluvu sAbash nAla thAn avalavu periya thaniyA(Was tani so long because of excessive sabhAsh)" . I didnot have an answer to his gesticulation(but his excess praise was obtrusive to my ear).To me the tani was almost to a right proportion(may be 23 minutes was just slightly long for many others) .

Tx for your correction. What does paLLu in tamil mean?I have heard that only in sarees.I heard TMK singing more like paLLi (not paLLu) only.Perhaps the ending vowel i and u is difficult to catch.

pallU is the free end of the saree - I think it is called 'talaippu' in tamizh (also muntugil, possibly). pallu would be tooth/teeth!
paLLu AFAIK is a type of literature - I am sure the experts will help us out here...

And since this singer was not clear, here is a track where the singer leaves absolutely no doubt what the words are with her crystal clear diction! Just imagine this song coming your way with the sprightly dancing with beautiful and clean lines of (Kumari) Kamala, and you'll get the full picture!

rajeshnat, your confusion is understandable.
Most of the Tamil words ending in 'u' are pronounced with a weak, half 'u' sound.
This will be obvious especially when compared to the Telugu 'u'. This concept is called 'kutRialugaram'.
Sometimes this rule applies even for 'u' appearing in the middle of the word.

e.g:
pandhu - ball - listen to a Tamilian saying this, you will know the difference.
ADuvOmE - 'u' is generally pronounced weakly.

Interestingly, BhArathi has set ADuvOmE to varAli in Adi tALam! mAnj or mAND is what we have been hearing it in, since DKP sang it for the movie nAm iruvar (aka We Two) by AVM. Didn't Kamala dance to the song? (correct me if I am wrong).
bhArathi sub-titles this sudandirap paLLu song as paLLAr (the peasants of paLLA caste--harijans or dalit) kaLiyATTAm--the gleeful dance of the peasants...

Arasi,
See my post: #4 in this thread for that very same observation...
Kamala danced her heart out in this movie - my grandmother used to say 'Sangu konDE vetri UduvOmE-kku avaL vaLampuri Sangu mAdiri vaLanji ADinAL'!

I heard agala killEn iRaiyum enRu a few decades before when Shri TVS sang . IIRC,it is part of 4000 divyaprabhandhAm. I am so confused with so many azhvars, you promised some time before you will start a seperate thread.Did you do that ???

Dear rajeshnat,

I have been not been able to keep upto the promise. I had been running around for my PhD admit. Now that I have somefree time before school starts for me. I shall post the write up on divya prabhandham. I had actually started writing some stuff on it under the topic "pAvin innisai pAdi tirivanE". Please bear with me till this weekend. Thank you
