Usha Padmanabhan, Naada Inbam, 15/Apr/2017

Post by sankark »

with VV Srinivasa Rao, B Ganapthiraman & AS Krishnan (mOrsing).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t_Y6IE ... e=youtu.be

Anandabhairavi shlOkam and the first song in that rAgam seems to be cut. koluvaiyunnAde (dEvagAndhAri), cintaye mahAlinga (paraju), paripUrnakAma (pUrvikalyANi), nIlOtpalAmbikAyAm nirvAna (kannadagowLai, is this close to the nagumOmu Abheri? a very different character comes out compared to the OrajUpu, tempo and character both), nidayachE (ykk, what a ykk exposition it was) etc. featured and the main was bhairavi, mugattaikkAttiyE, RV school's specialty. (2nd bhairavi in 2 days after y'days bhairavi by RKM).

RV was scheduled for today but UP, her sishyai filled in for her guru. And she seems to be filling the shoes pretty well.

No cut. Started with a ragamalika slokam in Gambheera Nattai(?) and Anandabhairavi.
nIlOtpalAmbikAyAm nirvAna (kannadagowLai, is this close
to the nagumOmu Abheri? a very different character comes out compared to the OrajUpu, tempo and character both),
Dikshitar school version of the raga I think. Seems to resemble Abheri more closely.
nidayachE (ykk, what a ykk exposition it was)
Yep. Sure was. Prompted me to post the URL in the Sowkyam thread.

Memorable concert. There was another one from towards the end of last year (Giripai main) which was also very special. Not sure if it is on parivadini.

Particular thanks for the team to allow archival on Parivadini.

In the absence of RV herself, I am very happy that the spot was given to one of her students, rather than to another big senior. We got the RV-school flavour and spiritual uplift; I left the hall with that very specific smile on my face.

So thanks to Usha for being the ambassador of her guru and her guru's school. But Usha, Sumathi, Sumithra, and several others are more than ambassadors: they give they very own concerts, and those concerts are always wonderful. I wish that we could see very much more of them ...presenters and secretaries, please! Thank goodness that Naada Inbam Jaya is a staunch fan of the Vedavalli School!

It was a lovely concert indeed. Accompaniment was properly proportioned and subtle, with lovely work from mridangam and violin, and the nice-surprise appearance of the neglected morsing on the stage, which blended very well.

gambhIranATTai, Anandabhairavi shloka
koluvaiyunnADE - dEvagAndhAri - Adi - T (sketch)
cintayE - paras - Adi - MD (S)
sAkEta dIpa - pUrvikalyANi - trishra Eka- NS
nIlOtpalAmbikayA - kannaDagauLa - Adi - MD
nI dayacE rAma - yadukulakAmbhOji - dEshAdi - T (R)
nIkElarA - dEvamanOhari - Adi - ?
mugattai kATTi - bhairavi - cApu - Papanasa Mudaliyar (RNS)
tani
collinAl toDarcci - viruttam in kAmbhOji, nIlAmbari, suraTi
patiki hArati - suraTi - Adi - T
mangala shlOkam in suraTi

The gambhIra nATTai shlOkam was somewhat concerning, since I didn't know at that time that the artiste was from Vidushi Vedavalli's school. As the concert progressed, it became OK. The kannaDagauLa (I'd written down as karnATaka dEvagAndhAri actually :D ) and the bhairavi are standard items for the school.

I felt a big sag, list-wise, when there was pUrvIkalyANi after paras, and then a very slow (if rich) nIlOtpalAmbikayA. The yadukula kAmbhOji was indeed wonderful. The filler could have come sooner, and could have been more energetic. Again the problem of a less-known filler.

The main item was a bit of a surprise: I expected rakShabeTTarE or bAlagOpAla. But then the cApu quota would be left. :)

I felt the violin was not audible enough during the AlApanai returns. Other than that there was solid accompaniment.

Percussion support was superb throughout. The tani was rather short, I thought. The post-main section was also brief, allowing me to get back home one train sooner.
