A concert of exclusive Tamizh songs is always a pleasure to listen to. When Gayathri Girish announced after the first song that being the Tamizh New Year Day, it will be concert of exclusive Tamizh songs, there was a huge applause from the audience welcoming the concert. Tatvamariya tarama, the opening number, was a bright start to a great concert that was to follow. After a sedate Edayya Gati, a virutham in the beautiful Bhairavi was presented followed by the Arutpa in the same ragam. This song I have heard in earlier days in Athana. It was tuned in an attractive Bhairavi by Gayathri’s first Guru Vaigai Jnanaskanadan of the SSI school. Ragam Kalyani came for an elaborate treatment very soon followed by the Tevaram which is also new to me. The raga bhavam of Kalyani was oozing in every phrase in the alapana as well the tevara padigam. It is on the Presiding deity of Marundeeswarar kovil in Tiruvanmiyoor. There was an elaborate neraval on the lines Kazhaladi naatti naan malar thoovi valam seythu vaattam theerthidum Vaanmiyoor eesane- very meaningful lines chosen for neraval. Gayathri’s neraval reflected the bhavam contained in the sahithyam very effectively and the audience showed their appreciation most liberally. The neraval was followed by a cascade of swarams. After the two filler songs, Saveri was given a very elaborate treatment along the characteristic phrases revealing the multiple hues of the ragam in a sensitive manner. I have been longing to hear this Kamakshi song for quite some time. Now GG has fulfilled my wish. My special thanks to GG for this. There was elaborate neraval on the anupallavi lines Aamo unakku en meedu paraamukham and was followed by elaborate swarams in two kalams which culminated in an interesting long korvai.
This was the first time I listened to the Tanjore Sankara Iyer Padam in Suruti. The accompanists provided very good support. The violin alapanas of M.A.Krishnaswamy were most appropriate. His neravals and swaras had the required imagination and katchitam. Skandasubramaniam embellished the concert with his anticipation, deft strokes and right nadam. H.Prasanna jelled with the team admirably and the tani was well appreciated by the discerning audience. An excellent concert for two hours.

I did not know that Tanjavur Sankara Iyer had composed Padams.
