BTW, the Academy lec-dem list is most uninspiring...Surely TNS' creativity can come up with something more meaningful than a series of tributes to composers!

<<lec-dem schedules>>
My my, what a lovely collection of lec-dems! How I wish I could attend at least some of them, e.g. ragamalika structuring (vedavalli), rakti raga alapanam (alleppey), innovation in swara kalpana (TRS)... Hope these are being recorded.
If someone from our forum attends any of these, please do post reviews here.

The Music Academy lec-dems this season all are about compositions from various composers. Some variety would have been better I think.

Some of the lec-dems at IFS and Parthasarathy Sabha look more interesting

Could someone please post a list of the "season's best" awards given at the MA Sadas today? This information is very hard to find in general if one is not in attendance at the event itself. It would be nice to know who won in the categories of best raga singing, senior/junior artiste etc.

many thanks in advance.

There were so many awards (many of them for the same category) that it is quite a job to provide a complete list. Anyway, here's a partial list of awardees (uncategorized and in no particular order) - others may kindly add more/make corrections. To begin with, our own forum member Mannarkoil Balaji bagged one! Hearty congratulations to him!

Sanjay
Aruna Sairam
TMK
Malladis
Sowmya
Pantula Rama
Gayatri Venkat
Vijayalakshmi Subramanian
OS Arun
Ranjani and Gayatri
Sudha

I was there at the Sadas. Was surprised to know that Bombay Jayashree, Nityashree, OST, Gurucharan were not awarded any prize even though they sang extremely well!!!!

Of the artists listed by musicsyndrome, I did catch OST's concert and I thought it deserved something...in any case, I feel that the plethora of awards robs them of any significance...

BTW, would anyone have the awards list of other major sabhas?

Vijay,
Why would you want the list if the plethora of awards robs them of any significance?:) you know I am just kidding...

Arasi these plethora adds lustre to our entire career as musician. Even though you have said it as a "Kidding" it is very deep in our hearts as artistes as recognition of one's talent is given as Awards. To top it all if it comes from MUSIC ACADEMY each and every musician, (Whatever they may say, feel, write about this institution) savours the SADAS moment at the Academy for over many years. I have even many musician friends who will not accept any concerts on 1st Jan precisely for the reason that MUSIC ACADEMY SADAS is such a great occasion for any artiste. Moreover if you were an artiste and waited for 19 years (hahahahaha i am taking about myself here) to get the any award like this from the Pinnacle you will realise its value.

And we had several people in this forum raising the question "What's the big deal about Sangeetha kalanidhi"! These sentiments expressed by an artiste support the point raised in 'Unrecognised musicians' thread. (sometimes we rasikas can't empathise with musicians well enough...!)

Balaji, hearty congratulations!

Mridangam,
Congratulations on the award! And my apologies for sounding flippant. I am sorry I wasn't clear in conveying what I meant. My kidding was NOT about deserving performers or of awards. It was meant for Vijay who in one breath spoke of the plethora of awards and then was keen on getting the list! As a good rasikA (I hope), I want musicians to flourish and to be feted and encouraged so that they would give their best to us rasikAs.
Have a rewarding year!

Heh Heh Arasi - I have been caught plumb!

Balaji Sir, hope I did not get misunderstood - I know all awardeed are deserving and greatly value an honour from the academy...I only could not understand why there was more than 1 award in the same category in certain cases. Perhaps I was not paying engough attention.

My apologies also for leaving out so many names, especially mrudangists and percussionists.

I am assuming that Shri Neyyattinkara Vasudevan did not perform at the season this year. Has he ever sung at the music academy?

Now the request: any recordings of his MA concerts for u/l? (you knew that was coming, didn't you, Cool-ji?)

i am working on the highlights of one such concert....

What struck me first , when watching Neyyatinkara Vasudevan at Academy was the SMALL ness of his voice.I cannot find a better expression. It looked so thin and delicate.

But he turned out to be such a sensitive singer. All those rich, lush grren spots of a raga or krithi , he would caress them.

Caress.
That is the word.I have never heard anyone else sing in such a caressing way ...
Rama Rama Guna Seema , Govardhana ....
Those were nice experiences.Hopefully this track should bring some of that magic.Tomorrow.

Shashi - I just want to hug you, and thank you immensely for the audio clip! Obviously it's not Shri Neyyatinkara, must be Lalgudi and Shrimathi! (pls confirm) The music is simply divine. If you have more excerpts from this concert, please do share.

And we are still waiting for the Neyyatinkara one.

I have attended two or three MA concerts of Neyyattinkara( not only at MA,but other main places like KGS,MFA club concerts during the season) one MA concert(88 or 89?) still fresh in memory.he sang one RTP in natta kurinji which goes like tathadhimi tadhimi dhimi ena nadamAdum sabhEsan kanakasabhayil. That was when he was at the peak of his carrer. And the following year at MFA club, bahudAri was so good which forced the traditional paTu chElai mylapore mAmi to comment ‘naNa pAdrAr’
Though his main guru is Semmangudi ,he has learnt under Ramnad Krishnan in the late 60s.

you must have intended that link to be posted at the Lalgudi thread.
Sorry, I don't know how to slice up an audio file. I assume it's still there at the rapidshare location.
Look forward to the Neyyattinkara clips.
