Prabatha Sangeetham by Vidushi. Kalavathy Avadhoot June 11

Prabatha sangeetham was envisaged to bring out the Bhakthi and Classical aspect of Carnatic music without any accompaniments , where the artist has to soak in it and take the audience through this journey. The artist has the freedom of choice and format. There is an internal listening to oneself and an external communication of the same with the audience. The experience is unique not only to the audience but also to the artist. Where the artist sees this, there is an elevating experience of music.

This was what was felt by the group of small but interested listeners in the Prabatha Sangeetham of Vidushi Kalavathy Avadhoot. The format chosen fit the intent of the program perfectly. Without raga or swara delienation the manodharma came to the fore with the shlokam and the compositions.

She started of with the famous Gajavadana in Sriranjani followed by another popular number in Athana, Sakala Graha Pala neene. This was followed by a jaunpuri piece Pahi Pahi mam of Narayana Theertha in Jaunpuri. The ragamalika shlokam Kasthuri Thilakam in Saveri, Shamugapriya, Kedaragowla and Hindolam was followed by the beautiful song “Hannu Bandithe” of Purandaradasa in Hindolam. Excellently tuned by Shri.R.K.Srikantan sir like a hindustani piece and sung beautifully by Vidushi Kalavathy, this was a treat. The next was the famous ragamalika Nalinakanthim (made famous by Vidwan Maharajapuram Santhanam). In each of the raga of this ragamalika the artist brought our her own manodharma which added to the rendition of the song.

The song to come next was the the Kamas piece of Bhadrachala Ramadoss, “Ee vela nannu brovara” which was followed by the Desh piece of Purandara dasa. Rama rama ninadaaga in SindhuBhairavi was the next song preceded by a a lilting raga. This is a composition of Prayaga Rangadasa, grandfather of Vidwan M.Balamuralikrishna. The artist ended the session with a mangala shloka.
All in all a great start to the day.
