I'm just back from this concert - no review, I don't have the knowledge for it. Just a quick note to say what a satisfying three hours - 7 to 10 pm - it was. The audience was actually quite meagre, compared to what is usual at other venues; the hall was just about half-full. But Sanjay sang as he always does - sincerely, with utmost involvement and imagination - how he gets the pulse of the audience so right!
The crowd was mixed, because the festival is Hindustani and Carnatic. A younger musician, Abhishek Borkar, very talented, had played the sarod for an hour-and-a-half, from 5. Many were Hindustani aficionados. But the concert captivated everyone, apparently, because when it was over, everybody seemed to have a dreamy smile on their face. Many seemed reluctant to leave!
I had a great time - my personal favourite was " teertha karayinile", followed by "paayum oli": incredible bhavam, the tenderness, the romantic longing and celebration - how well Sanjay's voice evoked it. I could hear whispers from behind adadaa, yenna madhiri padran...apaaram...
Whatever Sanjay's quirks - I don't think of them as gimmicks - no concert of his can leave anyone unmoved, and no concert of his is shoddy, or un-engaging. When I look around, and see musicians who're singing the same songs over and over, or making a big event of every little thing they do, or boring you to tears, I think Sanjay is, as someone said recently, here, quite a gem. A gem with a great work ethic, a sense of adventure, curiosity and eagerness.
Good night!
