Trichur Ramachandran @ MA, Dec 17, 2017
MA Sundareswaran Violin
R Ramesh Mridangam
AS Sankar Ghatam
1. Kalyani, Varnam Vanajakshi
2. Begada outline, Samikku sariyanucu , T swaras
3.Varali broad alapana, karunajudavamma,SS N@padambujamu sadabhajincuni
4.Purna shadjam, Lavanya rama T
5.Purna pancamam, good outline, Sadhujana citta sarasijodayam sakalam brahmamayam MD
6.Mohanam, long alapana, nannu palimpa T
7.Bahudari, unnadiye gatiyendru GNB
8.Gowli pantu, tarunamidamma SS
9. Kambhoji excellent aalapana, mahatripurasundari, GNB swaras
10.RTP Brindavana sarangan maruga muruga guha shanmuga, Thani
11.Kannada outline, vedanaai vandhavan velanadi
12.Kunthalavarali, ninnupogada GNB
13.Shamugapriya virutham, muthai tharu
Excellent concert. Accompanists were shoulder to shoulder with him. MAS was very classy. Percussionists didnt miss a beat.
Varnam was okay. TVR is known for his Kalyani - I was hoping he would have a main or RTP in that. Varali was very good, Kriti was okay. Purnashadjam was a quick filler. Purna pancamam (Dikshitar) was well done. First time I'm hearing that ragam/kriti. The lyrics were profound as per MD standards. Therewas a good outline alapana of the ragam. I couldnt place it into any group. Good selection. He prefaced with a brief explanation of the "Brahmam" several composers allude to. Mohanam was awesome from the start. Nannu palimpa was very good, no swaras. 7 and 8 were just enough.9 was very good. I havent heard this Maha Tripurasundari before. More info needed. Brief RTP was good and TVR handles this ragam very well. But nothing extraordinary today but very enjoyable. Brief thani was high energy. Short sketch of Kannada before 11. Lost the lines once or twice but recovered very well. 12 was good. Virutham in SPriya was awesome, but muthai tharu did not continue the high standard. There were several flashes of his stentorian voice and imagination throughout the concert. With TNS and TVS (has he completed 50 years there?) not singing at the meccademy any more, TVR is the last of the old guard on the Men's side along with OST. Very good overall ...

Thanks @ratanabhinav it was definitely Kambhoji. Typo and a silly one at that entered during a hasty lunch break. Can it be corrected in the first post?ratanabhinav wrote: ↑19 Dec 2017, 17:44Sankarabharanam ah ? I thought I heard kamboji . Typo maybe ?
Thanks @Venkat Ramachandran I was wondering if it was GNB's composition since it had no mudra and the concert had more of his compositions as usual with TVR.

Thanks @ratanabhinav This was definitely Varali.ratanabhinav wrote: ↑19 Dec 2017, 17:46I think this was in panthuvarali . I definitely heard panthuvarali and not varali .
Are any of Syama Sastris compositions originally set in or later sung in panthuvarali? He seems to have favoured varali and punnagavarali.

Why can't you check with MA souvenir? Or his list didn't get published?
I have heard Sri Syama Sastri krithis only in Varali. Never in Kamavardhani.

Sri Vijay Siva renders karuNa jUdavamma in pantuvarALi, so there is another oral tradition of this kriti.pvs wrote: ↑20 Dec 2017, 08:04Thanks @ratanabhinav This was definitely Varali.ratanabhinav wrote: ↑19 Dec 2017, 17:46I think this was in panthuvarali .
