Manda Shruthi Ravali ,
Kamalakiran Vinjamuri,
Rohit Prasad.
A lovely concert.
Velvety mohanam that was honey all the way (some incongruous metaphor for sure); a breezy janaranjani; a measured and stately Sriranjani essaying Marubalka, considered the proud possession of a yester-year musician, but it flowed without any nasal release and unhindered and without any superhuman striving, but bringing out the raga in its full glory, presumably keeping the words and text as Thyagaraja intended; a dulcet entha muddo (bindumalini) revived the mohanam mood; an expansive Varali, pliant and pleading, seguing into mamava Minakshi, the classic Dikshithar piece defining Varali, Varali was dripping with Varali rasa right through, neraval, swara or whatever; a sprightly puryadhanasri
She has a stage presence like Pantul Rama, pleasing and dignified, though showing emotion more explicitly.
She made it gripping without taking up any of the six major ragas usually covered in a concert.
My wife enquired in between whether Gayathri Venkataraghavan was singing.
I thought 'Manda' can be dropped!

Well, she is fire crackers--confident,lively and expressive. Most of all, she seems to like her music. Kamalakiran plays so well too, of course!
Year 2006, Cleveland. This charming little girl dressed in fluffy pink and white rode the elevator with me in the hotel. We had a little conversation: do you sing? An emphatic yes to that. She says, 'my mother is Manda Sudharani. She sang here yesterday. Were you there?' 'No', I said, 'but I'd like to listen to her'. Later, I did, at MA, and looked around for the perky little girl. I find her to be a charming young woman now, and how she sings!

Janaranjani superb!
Mohanam - she took a very beautiful but rarely sung krithi - but something was missing in it for me - I think kalapramanam, in places I felt this song was a bit hurried. But in the end she gave a nice touch with different names of Sri Rama - too sweet but nicely done.
I have not heard a better version of this song than the one by Neyyantinkara Vasudevan available in YouTube.

Ohh I prefer the Santhanam version. It's in a commercially released album with a trade mark Mohanam alapana.HarishankarK wrote: ↑21 Dec 2017, 11:40 Janaranjani superb!
