Vocal - T. N. Seshagopalan
Violin - M. Chandrasekhar
Mridangam - Guruvayur Dorai
Kanjira - Sree Sundarkumar

TNS was felicitated at this venue for Sangeetha KalAnidhi by sabha officials, including Cleveland Sundaram. With excellent shruthi alignment and a well-rested voice, the maestro was in peak shape that day to deliver a real treat to his rasikas. The venue was bordering the tank of the Marundeeswarar temple. If we think of Him as being Man’s doctor, then it would be apt to call TNS the pharmacist of that day… selecting the most potent ingredients, concocting the finest musical medicine, and thus taking the rasikas to a higher state of spiritual health.

He began with a brief essay in suddha-danyasi, followed by Harikesanallur Muthiah BAgavathar's varnam "SrI rAja mAthangIâ€

Thanks Raja. You have given a wonderful review. I was also present as always in this concert but hve no more words to add to yours. But still as Vedantadesika has said he tried to write about the Lord out of his desire to talk about Him which is like nector to the ears and the tongue, even though great masers kij ke Valmiki and Vyass have said what all that has to be said, I also wish to say a few words. The poorvi alyani as you have said rightly never fails to delight he rasikas no matter how n many times one has heard him sing adn i tis true with all the ragas. The poorvikalyani that day was apoorvikalyani, never heard before and something extraordinary. The kirvani was another marvel and you have described it very well . It was badhamkheer vani! You said it was ringing in your ears while you waited at the bus stop. Very true. I left by car of my friend ( if I had known you I could have given you lift if youwere going my way)and it took 1hour to reach Abhiramapuram due to traffic jam unusual at that hour but we were savouring kirvani and never bothered about it.The kondu kootti technique he followed in kalikiyunte was marvellous and audience applauded two times during neraval itself. The svar had all the acrobatics and polevaults. As the secretary remarked his music desrves aksharalaksham and he did not leave anything out , of course as you sa , till next time!Every timt it looks as though he has covered everthing possible to explore only to find that he goes even higher the next time. For TNS sky is the limit The secretary has rightly said that whenever he sings anything it acquires a special status stamped with his mudra. His kirvani is still ringing in my ears!

Hi raja,

Thanks for the concert review. These kind of reviews are useful to people who are outside Chennai. It gives me a partial experience of attending.I have to say that You guys in chennai are very fortunate guys. Anyway I will keep thanking all you guys/girls in different threads for taking time to write reviews.

We get to hear less of even the popular persons (read as TNS, TMK, Sanjay, Bombay jayasree, Aruna, Sudha...) in bangalore and the youngsters a simple nil.

When you mentioned of Keeravani , Please listen to Varamulosakshi (patnam subramani iyer) a sub main piece , for 32 min by TMK and ably supported by s varadarajan and GDorai in an album. It was a concert release of music season by TMK in 2000. I have not listened to a better Keeravani so far than this one. The Bhavam was so much captured and the neraval was haunting in that album. If I hear that song once, I can spend the whole day with the song magically buffered at my ears for the rest of the day. I think sometime that it probably is Keeravani raga rather than the artist that haunts us. Who are the Keeravani olden day stalwarts ?

TMK's Guru, SSI's RTP in Keeravani in Music Academy 1964 has always been hailed as the piece-de-resistance in this raga "Brahmai Vaaham Kizha Sadguru Kripaya"...any of KVN's keeravani alapana never needs to be spoken about, sowkyam soaked for eternity....Madurai Mani's kalpana swaras in this raga are etereal!

Keervani.

DKJ's Amba Vani for AIR (1991) in the company of MSG and Karaikudi Mani is a classic.

There are many many renderings of Kalyanraman which are top notch stuff.

yes indeed.keeravani has that magic quality.

http://rapidshare.com/files/11228745/kv ... i.mp3.html

Here is a keeravani from the late 90s by KVN-Isai Vizha.
we pick up the action at the neraval.
The last track My Late Dad recorded for me.Listening to this in absolute silence (He was to die , a few days later and we both were aware of it coming) he remarked :
I dont care whether it is going to be Heaven or something else , as long as I am sure that Music is going to be there.

Niraakara Brahma .. That is what this KVN-Keeravani combination has meant to me, ever since.Enjoy !

Coolkarni Sir, Thanks for the keeravani clip. What a soul-stirring neraval !!!
He should be called the 'neraval margadarshi':).

Is the mridangam artiste KRM Sir? Also, do you have the complete tani avartanam?

Coolkarni,
While there are gigabytes of music to download and listen,
hearing a song with special mentions about a song,rAga, and experiences from people like you adds more pleasure while listening.
