Bombay Jaishree - Music Academy - 20-12-17
Bombay Jaishree
Manoj Siva
Mysore Srikanth-Violin
P S Purushotaman-Ganjira
Date: 20-12-17
Venue: Music Academy
This was my first MA Concert. Bamboo-type “stage set up” was very simple and wonderful. Bombay Jaishree started her Sudha Danyaasi Raagam at 6.45 PM, MA time.
For few concerts, especially, Sanjay, Ranjani and Gayathri and BJ, not only MA but also other venues were full in advance. For Vani mahal (TBGS), I heard it was full house (Gajaa can reconfirm), here too.
When I asked Mylapore Fine arts (MFA) person about advance booking for BJ’s concert, (she sings next week), he replied to come one day in advance and EARLY, so that I will not be disappointed. He also added that is VERY IMPORTANT, “BJ pays takes around 30 tickets and issues to all her friends/relatives etc”.
So, artist herself, stands in the queue to get tickets depriving us the chance !!!!?
BJ- We require some introspection of this artist. Iam not a huge fan of BJ and but I always admire her sincere approach to CM. Her knowledge in CM is unquestionable. To my knowledge, she has been singing more than 15 years. How can I forget her “pozudhu migavAchudhE (revathi), deena charanyanE (karnaranjani). But when I started listening to her live CM, I was wondering her “clarity of sAhityam”. Knowledge of music marred by lack of sAhitya clarity. Yesterday also, the same situation still contined.
With a perfect acoustics in MA, she still sings “wah muruga”, instead of “wA, murugA”.
I was not lucky as Gajaa, who attended VM concert and reviewed, as played very safe, taking bEgada and RTP in bairavi.
varNam-Sudha dhanyasi- Sri rAja mAthangi- HMB
atAnA- rAgam followed by anupamagunAmbudhi –Thyagarajar
ranjani rAgam followed by “paramapAvana pApamOchanA- Meesu krishnaiyer (S)
bEgadA- main- followed by vA murugA vA- Spencer Venugopal
neraval in tEn madhura suvaiyE vA
Swaram in “lAvanya kArunyA subramanyA vA vA
RtP in bairavi – Pallavi
லலிதே, சிவவனிதே, பரதேவதே, சௌபாக்யதே, மாம்பாஹி”
lalitE, sivavanitE, paradevatE, sowbhaagyatE, maampAhi.
Tani
vasudEva sudham..krishnam vandE jagatgurum - vrutham followed by AlOkaya Sri baalakrishnam – Narayana Teerthar Tarangam -rAgam Charukesi or sarasAngi (not clear)
TillAna – Amir kalyAni – This tillAna had lines like “santatamu nammidhi saradhintu, sundari sarvEsa…….”
pavamAna- Magalam
The best of the concert was bairavi raagam. She took at 8.05 PM and had enough time to elaborate the “ intricate pudIs” of Bairavi. Of course, the tAnam was short and pallavi too, to give space for tani,
Mysore Srikanth – His “finishing” is not good. In between, violin was not co-operating. BJ-Embaar is always my “dream-team”
Manoj Siva – PSP –Tani was good- PSP has put on weight. Also his Ganjira playing !!!!

Charukeshi not Sarasangi
Did she pronounce Sowbhagadhey as Sowbhaayate - or is it your typo?

Regarding pronounciation of artists I want to share this.
More than a decade back when I was talking to a famous conductor of orchestra for leading music directors I just asked when there are many good singers available here why do we bring in Uditnarayan who prounces paravaaillai as paruvaaillai !
He coolly replied that the audience like it that way that makes those songs an instant hit.
Now probably the reasons for seats getting booked well in advance for an artist can have many uncanny reasons

I have been to her concerts a few times. Like her voice, her poise and presentation. Though, I feel like I have been to an elegant tea party rather than a wholesome dinner party...

I agree. I will give 100% marks the way in which she, herself, conducts and leads the entire team of artists. That Gentle smile and a simple nod with the artists - some positive energy she creates which u can't see/observe with other female artists.

Yesterday was very good. As Bharathi said it reminded us of her when she was launched in the 80s? I remember attending an afternoon concert at MFA in the late 80s.

Yes the VM concert of Jayashri was indeed overflowing with many disciplines & radials thronging the sides of the stage too. The tickets had been completely sold out 2 days before the concert. As everyone has been saying, there is a certain uncanny charisma about her personality & her performance that warrants a lot of respect for her music. That said, I always felt el that she’s holding back from doing her best most of the times.
Of course, BJ with a Embar is an unbeatable combination that I would never want to miss. Will wait for the review of the NGS concert now.

And I suppose you guys write as if you are inebriated and not inabreated....
Reviewers do spell names incorrectly, but it isn’t done deliberately. If individuals have issues with the way reviews are written please point it out with a bit more grace, or do as Lady Astor said - “pull of your shoes and count, man” - or, in this case, get off your high horse and write reviews yourselves, with not just the artists name spelled correctly, but also with good grammar....

I like his reviews. Readable and funny without navel lint gazing. Qualifies for the top 5% of the quality posts here, sad to say!
