Sanjay at Bharat Kalachar

Post by kvchellappa »

(Review of a concert i have not attended!)
This is a touching review from FB post:
Vidhya Anand shared a link to the group: Sanjay Subrahmanyan Fans.

Sanjoy Subramaniam sir concert at Bharat Kalachar Dec 17.
Sankarabharanam
Tamil is loud and bold. A legend at his best😀
Sanjoy is bout of open throated singing , so full of verve and aural treat.
Mayamalava gowlai one of the wonder ragas, with Maha swaraprastharas In Tulasi dala mulache. Tyagayya’s best composition. We are so pained in our sins many times, that we wash out everything with the pure tulsi water. Paving the path to near all is so engaging and constructing a pyramid like structure in it.😀. Being midway the raga Alapana, is a huge challenge, and that is the true genius Sanjoy sir has. Be it Mantara sthayi to upper Sthayi or floating on a Akara for almost 20 minutes, is a fabulous music. He plays the pitch perfect always, in any pitch😀
. He handles his voice deftly as a hero , where raga acts as a prop.be it traversing fro m Kalyani, to sivasakthi, a very unique raga, Bahudari is such a finesse in it# rendition of unnadiye, a GNB gem, which this gem has proved it genius neat presentation. Kalyani, a sampoorna raga, has the quality of royal crown, placed in the throne of Carnatic music, and the one and only justice, in the melody and nuances, has been Sanjoy sir’s singing.A surprise helicopter shot, with a kannad lyrics by the evergreen gem purandaradasa, is his forte. From sivasakthi, a haunting mood, to the sowkhyam mood in Ananda Bhairavi, is stupendous to hear. Anchored Swaras sketches the picture of Anandabhairavi, which was like taking Chakkkara pongal smeared with ghee😀.well, on the whole, I am nowhere any big stalwart to even call this as a review, but a appreciation in my listening 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Love,
Vishal.A

P.S.
Vidhya Anand: This is my son Vishal who has innate Carnatic genius not just in singing but also lyricist and good patronist too😊

Is it tulasidala (tulasi bilva must be kedaragowla)

When you buy brand names, you don't look into ingredients!

If you care for ingredients, you don't necessarily buy brand name products.

You mean we should not listen to Thyagaraja? New Tamizh Isai movement?
How come 'tup tup' has become 'gup-chip'?

May be you don't. I do! And when you are cheap, you find any excuse to avoid brand names

Agree 100%.

Buy quality goods, they are long-lasting
No moaning about bygone products--
Appreciate all which we find now
They become tomorrow's treasures :)

Seems to be another magnus opus.

I could not go to this concert, But I sent my Amit shah (!!!) (friend) to monitor and give the feed back. Though, he is also a die-hard fan of SS, he made two points, "KalyAni is not Sanjay's kalyAni and it was a bit let down and secondly, RTP on any new rAga (like sivashakthi-even it is annouced prior to the start), he added, would not appeal to the audience, because you have raagam, taalam and paalavi - all in an unknown territory - and ultimately lower the interest of the rasikAs".

Actually Sivasakthi is practically varamu. So if you can enjoy varamu, you should be able to digest sivasakthi pretty easily. As the alap began and I was zoning in on varamu, Sanjay executed the sivasakthi jump & then announced the raga name.

grs,
Mmm...I heard from my amie that this concert was the best so far of Sanjay. Rajesh doesn't care for kalyANi that much. Your friend too, perhaps? Or, was it because it was in kannaDa? For me, it is kallu sakkarE (kalkaNDu). R.K.Srikantan's singing it delighted me no end. High time kannaDa krutis are also sung as mains in a concert...

Rajesh cares for kalyani if it is kamalAmbAm bhajarE , vasudevayani, abhayAmbA, needu charana, nijadasa (which i moved from dislike to like over the period of few years) . He does not care for kallu sakkare, endhukko nee manasu. Anyway this concert is a boxed concert as it is evening I and sanjay and team had to vacate to give the pandal to the next dance concert . He must have had 2 hours and 45 mins max is what i am guessing as the dance was 7pm . So as such it is possible to feel a big difference between open and closed (nirvana and non nirvana concert).

suresh,
Did sanjay sing only neraval for main in kallu sakare or did he sing swaras also ?? you have only mentioned only neraval.

He sang swaras also at pallavi line.

Yes... for reasons Rajesh mentions, this concert did not reach the dizzy "nirvana" heights :D

Being also in an open pandal at 4pm on a sunny day with fans whirring above, not to mention a weaker percussion support (missed whirrrrs decorating the high speed brighas) may have handicapped the presentation.

Rajesh,
Saw the களி (kaLi, joy) of listening to that kalyANi in someone who wouldn't have bothered much about SivaSakthi. Someone whom you liked to listen to, JS. Though she has drifted away, there she is, all smiles, on hearing that kalyANi, I guess. Sanjay
has posted her picture with him post-concert on FB...

Going off the track, from the Hindu review, I youtubed kallu chakkara song. It was sung beautifully by P B Srinivas. Can any one give me the raagam, sung by P B S. ?

SastrigaLE,
On seeing your review, I was going to say, kallu sakkarE koLLIrO--here, have some sugar candy crystals (kalkaNDu). Then I saw JS's beaming kalYANi kELida sihi mukha (a kalyANi-treated face) after the concert. She has sung nambik keTTavarilavO rangaiyya in kalyANi, a PD song as main so many years ago...
