Do people who post on rasikas.org only go to free concerts?

Post by harimau »

When you look at the Concert Reviews section of this website, you see very few of the ticketed concerts being reviewed.

Are folks too cheap to buy tickets? Are they ashamed to have gone to such concerts?

What is the deal?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Perhaps they do not want to take the risk of shelling out money to listen to the snake and monkey songs

You don’t need to buy tickets to experience the snake and monkey songs on Vijay Super TV channel. :P just suggesting the alternative!

So you see, nothing to do with tickets.

Also the stars always perform to their fan expectations and "image". Those concerts don't move the needle here in rasikas, although they keep the ticket till going.

Such pristine music by Dr B Balasubrahmaniyan accompanied by VV Ravi, Thiruvarur Vaidyanathan and BN Chandramouli at the academy. For me, a concert that perfectly fits the top left quadrant of Sachi’s matrix!! All of 3 listeners in the balcony!! Harimau is so wrong!!!!

does it matter?

Alternatively, logic dictates that people go to get good music (good === whatever scratches their itch) and pay for it if it requires so :)

Pristine Music - Absolutely. I did not attend this concert but the YT concert in which he has sung gajavadana - Kumara Etendra's magnum opus in Thodi speaks a lot of his music. I think he is a disciple of Sri. T Viswa.

Our corporate accountant once showed me a couple of functions in Excel. He said, "this is really easy, but makes you look really clever!"

Sachi has found the review analysis button! All very true.

But to answer the question, I'm afraid... Yes.

Good seats in (the?) comfortable venue are incredibly expensive and many others are not worth what they charge. And, we are absolutely spoilt...

With an excess of good, free music, why pay?

Ticketed programmes are invariably those of celebrated artists / crowd pullers who get widely reviwed elsewhere /discussed. A frequent contributor to rasikas.org, I don't think forumites depend solely on our forum.
Concerts are aplenty and active contributors may be running short of time.

Personally it has been a mix of both for me. I tried to avoid the extremely popular at the academy because I don’t want to hassle for tickets at 5AM inthe morning. Other venues of the same artist don’t pose this as an issue. And sometimes going for youngsters gives me a chance to listen to good Carnatic music. I attended Bharat, Sudha, Ravikiran, Sumitra Vasudev, Lalgudi Sinlings at the academy and then a lot of youngsters in the morning slot at academy and at Nada inbam. So basically it was a mix of convenience and artist preferences 😀

Rasikas are of many categories.

Patrons/Sponsors - who get tickets and give to dear ones/invariably attend concerts (themselves) say for BJ,SS Ra.Ga etc.,
Parents whose siblings work abroad and they send money to buy season tickets.
Those who come from abroad and take a room in around T.Nagar/Mylapore and take the season tickets (whatever the cost be !!!) and some people who come early morning and sit in Music Academy. If you happen to go there in the morning and just talk to them, you can understand this from their English. Also they can afford to have break fast (Rs. 70/dosa) lunch etc., Till the breakfast is ready, they attend lec-dem !!
Local parents who are life members of the sabha and get free pass.
Local non-life members - they are very choosy and come more for lunch and snacks than the concert. (This is the only 15-20 days, they get good food !)
College going- music learning - youngsters- they love to attend lec-dems and all free concerts at MA and other sabhas (according to the choices). As a learners, Sandeep narayanan, Brinda M, Ashwath N, Aishwarya R, can give enough music for them to learn.
While talking about lec-dem. For example, I heard, Hyderabad brothers gave a lec-dem today at parthasaarathy sabha on "How develop raaga bhavam from a composition ?. There was a full crowd, mostly of youngsters, (more crowd than their concert !!!). Tomorrow, Aruna sairam will give a lec-dem on how to practice carnatic music ?. Definitely, this will woo more youngsters.

As sivaramakrishnan, righly says, people who attend the concert(s), do not have time to write the review/do not know how to write the review.

Lastly, unfortunate people like me, working in a office, spreading 4th page of Hindu, everyday and hoping to get a pass.
Will go to the concert, if we get the pass/or time permits.

"if we get the pass/or time permits"
For many it is time pass like for Harimau. I have not seen him write on music. (I used 'seen', not 'read').

What's the bee in the bonnet for you and others against snake and monkey dance songs, as called derisively. What's exactly wrong with mAdu mEikkum kaNNE and kAlinga nartana tillAnA? I recall a concert in SKGS, Gokulashtami 2000 perhaps, when she didn't sing these songs. An Ahiri and thOdi ninnE namminAnu I recall. And you know what, there were very few takers. So she and others found songs to sing that bring in people, people willing to pay! Hopefully few will get attracted to other songs too.

This derision is getting too out of bounds!

Tradition, sankark, Tradition. Yes, I invoke the T word!

That she should sing; that Harimau should deride.

It's tradition!

It’s also 1) a communicable disease that’s spread from Harimau to others OR 2) a status symbol that others try to aspire for OR 3) a form of flattering Harimau (through imitation) OR 4) a combination of reasons...

This itself is a mini puzzle :P Would the # of such theses be 4PX or 4CX, where X = 2,3.

Yes but shortage of time is the real issue. Last season I ran out of time to do any more than the song lists for all (ticket and non ticket) concerts which gave me just enough detail to remember. This year I have other plans so will be lucky to attend half the number I attended last year, let alone write about them, though almost all involve ticketed concerts.
