Neyveli Santhanagopalan , MA ., 21 December 2017

Post by ratanabhinav »

Venue : Music Academy , Chennai
Date : 21 December 2017
Time : 9 am to 11 : 30 am
Artists :
Neyveli Santanagopalan (Vocal)
Delhi P.Sunderrajan (Violin)
V.Kamalakar Rao (Mridangam)
S.V.Ramani (Ghatam)
A - alapana , N - Niraval , S - Kalpanaswaram
List :
As I entered he was elaborating purvikalyani
Ninnuvinaga mari - Purvikalyani - Syama Sastri - ANS , N at pannagabhushana
( Alapana was great , violin reply was below expectations . Niraval and swaras were gripping and bhava rich )
Sri mathrubhotham -Kannada - Mudduswami Dikshithar - A
( As usual rendition . Nothing extraordinary )
Abhimanamenadu - Begada - Adi - Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer ( As usual rendition . One felt he could have sung more sliding and lilting sangathis , at pallavi line . Very catchy tune it is ! )
Sri Lalite - Bhairavi - Adi - Annaswamy Sastri - ANS , Thani
( Alapana was good and he explored bhairavi leisurely . Thanam - like phrases were exciting , stopping at Ri and singing around was very enjoyable . Violin reply was once again way below expectations . He played the pallavi line of ' amba kamakshi ' in alapana . Strange . Was expecting lot of manodharma show off from him . Niraval was out of the world . The kalpanaswaras with kanakku and sarvalaghu type both being sung with equal fervour . But one at times felt that his kanakku lacked the melody and bhava . And he got lost and mixed up in thala during certain avarthanams during kanakku . Happens though . But melody should not be sacrificed. That is the soul of our music . )
I left at this point

Points to note :

Point no 1 : Violin was substandard
Point no 2 : Thani was great , mridangam accompaniment was good
Point no 3 : Wonder why he did not sing RTP .
