A very engaging concert from OST with the excellence he is known to bring in his concerts. When he took up the RTP there was 30 minutes available. He took 25 minutes for the RTP but made a neat presentation of all the ingredients of the pallavi. This only prompted the other thread ‘No Mini RTPs’. More time was spent on Varali. I did not note the timings for tani. Hence he had to rush through the pallavi. He announced that this pallavi was set by his daughter who lives in Boston and conducts a music school there. Because his daughter has set the pallavi and he had come prepared to present the pallavi, he obviously did not want to skip it because of the time constraints. Nice that he took up Sreeranjani ragam for the pallavi.
The accompanists provided very good support.
I came in when he was just winding up the Varali kriti. I had never heard this song. I shall be grateful if anybody who attended the concert can give me the opening lines of the Varali kriti as I need it for my article for Sruti magazine.

One has to credit the lovely institution Music Academy which mandates artists to take up pallavi . OR may be the artist take it as an unwritten rule to always sing pallavi . OST taking Pallavi is only once a year event in academy , rest of his concerts he just feels it is not needed. His daughter name is Aparna Balaji , i reviewed once her concert . For such a great musician i only wish he sings more pallavi and if Aparna is the catalyst so be it for the rest of the year concertsCRama wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 15:58 • RTP-Sreeranjani

Dear CRama,
the varali song was "I menu galigina" by Thyagaraja. I have never heard that kriti by anyone in a live concert. no neraval in the kriti. there was also a well presented "Narada gana lola" with a short alapana of Atana and several rounds of fast paced swaras before the Varali. he wrapped up the concert with a 5 second surutti flash!

Shri CRama,
Thanks for the review. I recollect Shri OV Subramaniam his father's concerts in early fifties and his handling sriranjani was unique.
