CHENNAI MUSIC SEASON - 2017-18 -SUMMARY

Post by CRama »

The just concluded music season was highly enticing and enriching for me as I could attended more than 90 concerts starting from the morning lec dems at Academy and Parthasarathy Swami Sabha. This is the first year I ventured out to go so early to attend lec dems and it was really benefitting for me. Thanks to God for keeping me in good health. Whole day concerts robbed the time off for me for posting the reviews in rasikas. Then I have written two big articles for publication in Sruti magazine about the music season. Now I thought, I will share my experiences with my forum mates even though it is slightly delayed. Some of the concerts have been reviewed in this forum and I will skip those concerts.

I attended morning and after noon concerts in Mylapore/Alwarpet area and mostly in the evenings, I attended Mudhra as it is near my home. I could hear many grand old ragas, rare songs, less of Poorvikalyani, more of Varali, Saveri and Kambodi, and a few grand pallavis in intricate talams. A couple of years back, singing of pallavis in Hindustani ragams like Maund or small ragams like Kuntalavarali was considered trendy. Fortunately, this trend appeared to be very minimal this year. This year I heard pallavis mostly in heavy ragams and the duration of the pallavi was also adequate- 40-45 minutes on an average extending to an hour or more in the case of pallavi sung by Madurai T.N.S.Krishna and Ramakrishnanmurthy. However, I came to know that Thrissur Brothers in their Academy concert sang a pallavi in Durbari kanada - Desh combo and the concert won them the best concert prize in the sub senior category. Out of 30 pallavis heard by me in this season, only 2 were contrived for want of time. The host of lec dems I attended gave me lot of takeaways.

VETERANS- MY PRANAMS TO THEE.
The concert of R.Vedavalli in Music Academy stood testimony to her experience, concert planning, sincerity in execution and her adherence to authentic patantharam and the same has been reviewed in the forum. A highly classical and chaste presentation. The concert of O.S.Tyagarajan in the same venue was stunning for a rarely heard Varali kriti of Tyagaraja Ee menu galigina and abridged RTP in Sreeranjani. I had already posted a review of this concert in the forum.

Hyderabad Brothers Seshachary and Raghavachary presented a well planned and executed concert for Parthasarathy Swami Sabha on 25 Dec supported by L.Ramakrishnan and Trivandrum Balaji. Trivandrum Balaji seems to be their favourite Mridangam support in this season as I had seen this combo in many platforms. The alapanas of Hamsadhwani (Manasukarugamemi), Kharaharapriya (Pakalnilabadi) and Kalyani (RTP) conformed to the strict contours of the ragam and embellished with imaginative pidis and long karvais and attractive brighas in the right measure. Raghavachary’s sensitive approach and time tested sangathis got revealed in the alapana of Kharaharapriya. Cstomary neraval at Manasuna dalachimai and the volley of swarams were much enjoyable. The RTP in Kalyani- Tisra nadai- Govardhanagiridhara Gopalakulatilaka was given the grand treatment deserved by the RTP. They also sang a rare kriti of Tyagaraja in Asaveri- E paniko and two Kshetrajnar padams- Aligithe and Lemaro in Huseni and Saveri respectively. (To be continued)

GLITTERING STARS OF TODAY

After a decade, I heard the concert of Sudha Raghunathan in Mudhra on 18 December ably supported by Charumati Raghuraman , Neyveli Skandasubramaniam and Raman on Morsing. I was apprehensive about her voice felicity as it was said to be non cooperative in the last season. But this concert was much enjoyable for her planning, effortless singing, manodharmam elements and the tricky pallavi in Hamsanandi in Chatusra jhampa talam which later converted to Mishra Chapu. She also presented an authentic Ritigowla for Janani Ninuvina and Sankarabharanam for Etutanilachite.

P. Unnikrishnan’s voice is in very bad shape and his sruti and articulation leaves much to be desired. I attended his Mudhra concert just to see if there is any improvement in his voice and it was disappointment. He sang RTP in Mohanam and Kalyanavasantham. While doing neraval he could not do neraval as a dwiraga pallavi. He alternated between both the ragams. However, it was intriguing that he not only attracted a house full audience, but those who were present were most liberally showering their applauses when the music was wanting in many respects. A very sad state of affairs indeed.

Sanjay Subramaniam reigns as the superstar of Carnatic Music today with no competition. I got free tickets for two of his concerts- which is something very rare to happen for me. But I am not going to say all ga ga about the concert in Vani Mahal on 22 Dec. There are certain aspects which did not go well for me. He presented an excellent alapana of Yadukulakambodi, which is very rarely presented by todays’ stars. That alapana demanded a grand kriti like Ninnu sevinchina or Etavunanerchitivo. But he presented the pasuram Kondal Vannanai which is normally sung as a virutham converted into a kriti format. It was a misadventure and dampened the concert. If rasikas are waiting to hear his tamil songs, he could have presented any tamil composition which is not that scarce. Then the kriti Gangeyavasanadhara- was also not a good choice for the main song. His Academy concert was excellent which is still being discussed in the forum. I liked the Academy concert most because of the nice selection of songs and also that he eschewed the unmusical phrases in that concert which has become a part of his style and largely enjoyed by his fans. Select portions from his Tamil Isai Sangham concert was relayed in the radio in which the main song was Narayana Divya namam in Mohanam after a virutham. Here the unmusical phrases were in plenty which led me to think that he uses such phrases selectively- depending upon the venue.

Vijay Siva. His concert in Krishna Gana Sabha on 17 December conformed to his usual standard of excellence in patantharam and presentation, but faulty time management led to squeezing of the RTP in Suruti to 15 minutes. He could have skipped the Brocheva and given full justice to the RTP. This concert has already been reviewed in the forum.

Ranjani and Gayatri, mesmerised the house full audience in their maiden concert for Mudhra held on 10 December duly supported by L.Ramakrishnan, Sai Giridhar and Chandrasekar Sarma. The Saveri alapana by Gayathri for the main song Durusuga and the Kanada alapana by Ranjani for Kanthimathi annai and the alapana of Dharmavathy by both the sisters for the RTP in Chatusra jhampa and khanda nadai was pointer to their manodharmam, coordination and voice felicity.

The concert of Gayathri Girish for Chennai Cultural Academy on 22 Dec stood out for her vidwath, perfect planning, and unhurried presentation. The concert was for two hours and she did not clutter with too many songs. Opening the concert with Navaragamalika varnam, she presented kalpana swarams in all the nine ragams. She presented elaborate alapanas of two ragams- Hamsanadam and Sankarabharanam. The alapanas were finely structured with enough time allocated for sancharams around the vantage points. Sankarabharanam alapana was so structured and elaborate to ask for a pallavi. The song rendered was Manathirkisaintha Manalan- a composition of Muthaiah Bhagavatar popularised by her Guru T.N.Seshagopalan and in Hamsanadam she presented Kalyanarama- Uthucaud kriti. Chalamelara came as a filler.

Shashank in his concert for Mudhra on 21 Dec, presented an excellent alapana of Kalavati for the kriti Okabari joodara. I have never heard such an elaborate alapana of this ragam. Durmargachara was the main song and RTP in Kedaragowla. The typical cross blowing techniques, glides through the octaves, brighas and flashy sangatis made his concert a very enjoyable one. H.N.Bhaskar on the Violin was a perfect foil for the virtuosity of Shashank. Parupally Phalgun and Giridhar Udupa embellished the concert to a great extent.

I attended three concerts of Sikkil Gurucharan- two of them unplanned. His concert for Mudhra on 31 Dec accompanied by Nagai Muralidharan, Umayalpuram Sivaraman and Sreesunderkumar was wonderful. His Simhendramadhyamam (Kamakshi Kamakoti peetha vasini), Madhyamavathy (Palimsu Kamakshi) and Saveri (RTP in Tisra nadai) were very elaborate with his manodharmam riding high and voice cooperating well. He also sang a very rare song Sarivarilona of Tyagaraja in the ragam Bhinnashadjam- janyam of Kharaharapriya. The pallavi was a very old pallavi (Varattum Varattum padaraadiru maname) which he announced that Sivaraman Sir had played for this pallavi when sung by giants like Ariyakudi and KVN. Hence I am singing for his accompaniment. UKS, belying his age made a spectacular show with his unfailing energy, agility and manodharmam.

The concert of Suryaprakash for Parthasarathi Swami Sabha on 23 Dec accompanied by M.A.Sundaresan and Bhaktavalsalam deserves appreciation for his sruti adherence, planning, sincerity in execution and rich mandharmam. His delineation of three ragams- Narayanagowla (Kadalevadu), Shanmugapriya (Andavane) and Sankarabharanam (Sarojadalanetri) were rich in content and imagination. I was so enamoured by the SHanmugapriya that after the concert, I told Suryapraksh that you should sing RTP in Shanmugapriya instead of ragams like Brindavanasaranga, Hamsanandi etc. He faithfully rendered RTP in Shanmugapriya in Chennai Cultural Academy. But I could not attend. Once upon a time, Shanmugapriya was the favoured ragam for RTP. But this season I never heard any RTP in Shanmugapriya.

The concert of Abhishek Raghuram in Panchamukha Anjaneyar temple, Mylapore on 26 Dec was unforgettable. Abhishek was accompanied by V.V.Srinivasa Rao, Patri Satishkumar and S.Karthik. He sang highly imaginative alapanas of Arabhi (Palimparavemelara) and Saramathi (Mokshamugalada-Main song). The ambience was devotional with the Murthy of Anjaneyar kept on the side and Abhishekam, Aarati going on without hindrance to the music. The main song was Mokshamugalada which Abhishek rendered in his usual imaginative, exuberant manner with elaborate neraval at Veena vadana loludai and swaras at pallavi. The song took one hour. After the tani, devotional fervour took over in the virutham, Dasarathanandana, Balamu kulamu etc. We were treated to sumptuous vazhai elai sappadu after the concert. The accompanists were superb. This was the only concert of Abhishek I could hear.

The concert of Ramakrishnan Murthy in Mudhra was my best concert of this season. This I declared on 19 Dec itself and I never felt the need to revisit my decision. Brilliant accompaniment by T.K.V.Ramanujacharyulu and Trichy Sankaran contributed to the great success of the concert. The following is the list of songs.
• Abhogi varnam
• Dinamanivamsa (S)
• Azhi mazhai kanna (R,N)
• Vazha ulaginil peythiday –Neraval
• Amba Paradevathe-Rudrapriya (R,S)
• Parimalaranganatham=-Hameerkalyani
• Devi pavane-Saveri (R,N,S)
• Neraval at Somabimba
• Thani
• Maramanan
• RTP_Kapi - Khanda Triputa
• Pallavi- Peethambaradharapriya Radhikam mampathu Radhika

I have never heard such an elaborate and well rounded alapana of Rudrapriya. Saveri was top class with Devi pavane with neraval at Somabimba and the cascade of swaras enhanced by the power of the Mridangam. Kapi alapana was out of the world. Tanam was rendered as Ragamalika in Neelambari, Devagandhari and Ahiri- a very rare choice of ragams for rendering tanam. It was exquisite. Swara ragamalika was in Asaveri, Hameerkalyani and Revati. Absolute bliss for more than three and half hours.

FURUTRE OF CARNATIC MUSIC SAFE IN THEIR HANDS

Ashwath Narayanan coming in the KVN lineage is impressing the rasikas with his vidwat laden performance and his concert in Academy won him a prize. Of the two concerts I heard, the one in Bharat Kalachar on 16 Dec morning accompanied by L.Ramakrishnan, Delhi Sairam and Chandrasekar sarma was very good with nice selection of songs, sruti sudham, planning and manodharmam. Dayaranee (Mohanam) rarely heard in concerts was presented well with alapana and swarams. Devi pavane in the main suite in Saveri was rendered with amazing raga bhavam which brought memories of KVN rendering the same in Navarathri Mandapam.

I heard Amrutha Sankaranarayanan in Chennai cultural academy which depicted a sorry state of affairs as regards the audience attendance. Still she performed with sincerity, sruti sudham and manodharmam. But I find that her music is simply TVS music in saree. The robust style of TVS do not sound pleasing in a lady’s voice. Diehard fans of MMI and TVS may like it. But it is better for her to introspect and change her path. K.P.Nandini accompanied by Apoorva Krishna and Akshay Anand presented a very good concert in Academy. She presented a rare song of Papanasam Sivan Sree Jagadambikayai in Latangi. The main song was Kaddanuvariki. The young accompanists Apoorva and Akshay complemented well with their imagination and nice following.

Sid Sriram is an upcoming musician based in U.S who is at ease with film music, Carnatic, Jazz, Blues and many other genres of global music. Videos of songs written and music composed by him are available in you tube. Some of his Tamil film songs are also run away hits. He had nine concerts this season and his concert in Bharat Kalachar on a Sunday Morning was House full. His asset is his very good voice capable of traversing the three octaves with considerable ease with the right measure of volume and also pleasant on the ears. He presented chaste Carnatic music concert for two and half hours with elaborate alapanas of Kalyani (Biranabrovayide) and Thodi (Kaddanuvariki). The audience enjoyed each and every song and showered thunderous applause.

Madurai Sivaganesh is an upcoming singer who won the Mudhra Cutchery competition prize last year. In his concert for Mudhra, he impressed the listeners with a RTP in Keeravani set to a complex Sankeerna Triputa talam. Aditya Madhavan who won the Sangeetha Mudhra award this year presented a nice concert with nice selection of songs, good manodharmam, sruti adherence and sincerity.
I heard other young musicians like Nisha Rajagopal, T.N.S.Krishna, Vishnudev Namboodiri, Sunil Gargeyan, Sriranjani Santhanagopalan, Aiswarya Sankar etc who presented concerts of high standard.

Vignesh Ishwar in Naada Inbam elaborated rudrapriyA; he announced he adhered to MD/SSP's lakshanam and so it had some not presently used/rare phrases. Followed with rudrakOpa by MD. Think it would be in parivadini channel too

Your best concert is for three and half hours and the accompanying mrudangist is Trichy Sankaran for RK Murthy@Mudhra. As I read other concert artists that you mentioned almost all of them did not even touch more than 3 hours. Absolute time and accompaniment makes a big difference in quality. Thank you for your writeup, nothing to debate or take on what you have written . Just an observation. Ideally concert settling from 3 to 3 and 1/2 hours is best . That way RTP , Main ,Sub Main few elaborate alapanas ,tani etc never gets sabotaged due to paucity of time. I will write mine on or before end of next season as it would take time to collate that data.

Thank you for your writeup and well-informed critique of the artists and music. Even when your review is not positive, it is presented in the best spirit and without bias. If they ever get to see it, I'm sure that this can actually be useful to artists.

For the rest of us, you bring to our attention names to which we should be paying more attention.

Thank you.

Rajesh- One article for Sruti- I have named Season Musings (They may change the name also). It is not in the form of review. I have mentioned about the new kritis I have heard in this season, complex pallavis I have heard and some other aspects of the season. I have included whatever I have mentioned in my summary about P.Unnikrishnan and Sid Sriram (not copied). I have given some nice photos also.

Another article about the Lec dem Mela conducted by Sruti for two days in Arkay. Eight lec dems. A challenging task for me with heavy pressure as to the cut off time. I took some inputs from Sivaramakrishnan also. These lec dems are available in you tube. Provide good learning for music aspirants.

CRama,
Thank you.

I can visualise you and Sivaramakrishnan in the concerts like the way great sages are shown in paintings and movies attending important yagnas by Dasharatha, Yudhisthira and others.

Sirs, especially CRama and SRK,

Imagine you are two yaatris returned from Chaardhaam giving us kids prasaad and telling of your wonderful adventures and musical=spiritual experiences.
Won't our imagination take us to those places and moments? What prevents us from imagining you both?

This does not mean, at all, that we don't want more reviews. In fact, I find your narratives so interesting. They also educate me. So please continue.

I am simply amazed that you folks attended 70 concerts. That you made comparative notes.

Those who meme Mamas can go eat momos.

I think you people are the core audience for this art form. God bless!
