10. pavamAnA followed by raghavendra slokham in madhyamAvati

An excellent slOkham in nAttai that some how connected a slOkham that I may have picked up when I was a kid(help needed). An outstanding swara pattern in nAttai was preceded by a very good rendition of MD's krithi. The popular needayarAdha was quite good. An excellent and very detailed alApanai was sung in nalinakaanti , followed with a swara pattern not in his usual rapid fire style, but somewhat in medium to fast tempo , more suited to vellore rAmabadran's speed.

Another very detailed alApanai in poorvikalyANi was very good. His viruttam (I clarified at the end that was suryaprakash's) was very emotive obesiance to the bard and the lines and diction was perfect. The krithi of Dr srivastava was just average not just to me but to the whole crowd. The mmi popular saraswati manOhari was nice though felt it must be given a submain status than a good filler status.

If there was something that was truly outstanding it was his main in kharaharapriya. A 20 minute detailed alApanai followed by 4 minute return by vittal provided a firm foundation for the krithi. The krithi was sung for 8 minutes .The neraval (musically the perfect one in telugu I suppose) was sung with an excellent shruti suddham close to 14 minutes. The swarams were almost in line with alApanai close to another 15 minutes. Definitely one of the best kharaharapriya that I heard and it was close to 1 hr and 10 minutes. There was both manOdharmam ,shruthi suddham and a very good team work.

His rAgamaligai was well received by the crowd. The next tamil krithi was an exact replica of santhanam's famous "govindA ninna" in janasammOdhini. The krithi was just average and the surprise was that he introduced the composer amongst the rasika as suchir or suhir(some one can add if they have details on this composer from rochester??) . This contemporary krithi was based on goddess rAja rAjeshwari. The sindhubhairavi viruttam was detailed and had a good finish in the TVS popularized rAmachandra prabhu in sindhubhairavi.

The concert was a success as both suryaprakash and vittal adjusted very well to a fairly well set sarvalaghu pattern of shri vellore rAmabadran. I loved all the returns of vittal, in particular his continous bowing for kharaharapriya in neraval and swaram. The nalinakAnthi rAga alApanai of vittal was the best .

Shri vellore played well for all krithis but his tani was just minimum with almost no inspiration. VaikkOm was very good, perhaps little confused on when he has to play and when he should not.

rajesh,
Interesting--your thoughts about the saraswathi manohari kriti having more than a filler potential. Of course, I have heard the popular MMI version and that of VVSadagopan who made it synonymous with his name. Many are familiar with his three minute record version which he sang with detailed alApanA, neraval and swaram in his concerts. In one of his concerts this season, Sanjay not only elaborated on it, but sang it in 'slow motion' too, and it was delectable...
