This is the Musiri Chamber Concert series, they feature a different artist each month. The December concert was by Pantula Rama and a month or two ago, it was a lovely concert by Ravikiran (Chitraveena).

From a review of the vidwan's latest book, "Reshaping Art":
http://www.thehindu.com/books/books-rev ... 464582.ece
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a practising musician, Krishna, who hails from a patriarchal Brahminical order, appears to recognise the strangulations of his chosen vocation and almost in a state of frenzy proclaims: “Listening to a Karnatik concert is not mere exposure to the music; it is a complete Brahmin brainwashing package,” he says, adding, “the presentation of a Karnatik concert is a representation of Brahminical culture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this won't be yet another insidious brainwashing exercise on unsuspecting Tambrams!

I feel TMK should officially tonure (shave the head of) a Brahmin on stage every time. Someone like Perumal Murugan can compose a ritualistic chant to accompany the process.

@9 to @13-> well said Sirs!. Just a few days back Sri. Sachi had posted about a very enthralling performance over radio, by this musician. and in a different context had mentioned that Dikshithar kritis in sanskrit may take CM to North Indian audience of younger generation. . I was surprised and bewildered that a known Haridasa is ditching Purandharadasa and opting for Dikshithar! . TMK can achieve the avowed aim of overcoming casteism by taking the music of Purandaradasa ( unlike Thyagaraja , Purandaradasa has many krithis against caste discrimination .and social message of equality) That is the tradition of Bakthi movement from as early as Bagavath Gita and earliest Saivite and Vaishnavite saints of Tamilnad from 600 AD , to Tamilnad youngsters. It is tragic that he is wasting his talents....AND HE CAN SING A LOT OF TAMIZH SAHITHYAMS AS DID MS, DKP AND NCV during the 1940-1950 decade. Hindreds odf Papanasam Sivan compositions are there. The artiste can create awareness among the Tamil youngsters.

The bhajan is Aag Bhayi Sadho. Steeped in a melancholic reflection on life, perhaps a composition of a neo Kabir. It says one's life is a raging fire from birth to death and everything is drowning in the ocean of worldliness. The poet says he doesn't want to fight the fire he is totally captivated by it.
Wonder if a concert should end on such a sombre note. But then my Hindi is not great. Nevertheless perhaps the best sung item of the concert, in my opinion.
(Gajavadana, Nee mata, ninu sevinchina were the next best ones)...
A very high standard of singing, it exposed the challenges of singing without accompaniment but TMK pulled it off.
Hindola was good but the song too slow for me.
Somehow Hamir Kalyani has eluded TMK's grasp (for me) although he sings it often. It needs to be more playful and would shine through note to note jumps, whereas he puts a heavy Carnatic spin on it.

I was a little distracted during the bhajan, busy time then, wish I could hear it again..

Actually I especially liked the extra slow pace. I don’t think it would always be nice, but TMK does it very well.Hindola was good but the song too slow for me

Re: T M Krishna Live Concert to be broadcasted on YouTube tomorrow at 18.30
I caught it partly at the end during live phase and was hearing the rest of it through my work day. An intense Yadukula kAmbOji, he repeated once when he had to break the words for sEvincina. The video went offline as he began HamirkalyANi.
I wish he had rendered ni mATA in miSra gati albeit with approximate beats.
An honest effort without Mridangam, showing the depth of the musical tradition. I can see that it allows him freedom to regain composure whenever he desires so.
But can this be a path for others? I think they will need stature, and the kind of bull power in the voice, to be effective and acceptable.

I think the listing missed a major Tamizh item perhaps by PERUMAL Murugan. It had a long-winded alliterative line that TMK sang breathlessly and got much applause. I missed registering the opening lines.

Re: T M Krishna Live Concert to be broadcasted on YouTube tomorrow at 18.30
The last sentence of my story in post 244 in the thread under critics and rasikas comes to my mind now :”..... heaved an imperceptible sigh as he could not suppress his conscience secretly longing for that Mylapore mama’s simple silent appreciative nod..”
Tmk is too strong to heave any sigh.
Musiri is a Mylapore mama.Tmk is a mylaporean (future mama ) and the concert venue is in mylapore.
The erudite reviewer of The hindu puts it : “ to explore new horizons in music ,Krishna is seeking those outerspaces as arenas of his performances. “. This has landed him in a mylapore chamber. His revolutionary pure vocal art output without violin or mridangam to share any credit is noteworthy. The menu list and its sequential order deserves spl mention .First a song on elephant faced creature (not the usual vatapi ).the second one is on parthasarathy swami the philosopher - Geethacharyan
Then a song on Perumal Murugan( there are some who believe that murugan is behind the Thirupathi perumal..)a song on mother Kamakshi A Javali, raga malika and ending with Jagadodharana with bhajan. Not any single song on secular or social theme ( a la poramboke ),all on hindu religious references by religious minded vaggeyakaras!! A list worthy of any Ariakudy follower.
It appears there are two tmks. One who writes books ,another who sings. He who writes books has very good command of english and writes about abstract art music social inequities. Brahmin bashing ,hindu religion bashing demolition of established values , attack on famous personalities are now effective tools in tamil nadu to anyone who wants public success. He uses them well to get accolades and awards. Good.
The other tmk is one who is capable of singing very well.there will be no dichotomy if we do not expect any agreement between both and we may not have to ask him to eat his words.. Principles and practice. Our constant exposure to current day politics should have taught us that principles and practice have nothing to do with each other. But Tmk commits the mistake of correlating both occasionally and that makes us expectant.
The 25 km journey from Olcott kuppam to mylapore chamber where he is the successor to sangeetha kalanidhi Ravi kiran has taken place,.There is hardly 2.5 km from musiri subramanian salai to music academy.

Gajavadana Sammodita is not on the Elephant faced god [Ganesha] but on Murugan, though certainly not on Perumal Murugan. The original
