Abhishek Raghuram at Kanchi Mutt, Malleswaram, Bangalore - 13th October 2018

Post by monarchy »

Accompanying artistes:
Akkarai Subhalakshmi on the violin and NC Bharadwaj on the mridangam

Song list:
1. Karunanidhiye Taye - Bauli
2. Pahi Parvatanandini - Arabhi
3. Siva Siva Siva bho - Nadanamakriya(?). A small viruttam preceded this.
4. Sri Mathurapuri - Bilahari (Main with Tani)
5. Kamalamba Samrakshatu - Anandabhairavi
6. Jalandhara supitasthite- Valaji
7. Kaave kanyakumari - Sahana (Dr BMK's composition)
8. Bhavani Dayani - Sindhubhairavi (On Anantha Krishnan's request; he was in the audience too :) )
9. Patiki haratire - Surati
10. Nee nama rupamulaku - Mangalam

No superlative can enough describe the bilahari! Every piece was in detail (with exception to of course the mangalam and the one preceding it) and was dripping in Abhishek-esque music.

Akkarai Subhalakshmi was her usual awesome self. I was able to greet her after the concert and get a nice autograph to make the concert even more memorable. The mridangam artist, NC Bharadwaj, was extremely pleasing in his music. I've to be honest and admit that I don't understand the intricate details of laya and thus can only judge the aural aspects of the music and I opine that his accompanying has to be rated quite high. The best part of the concert, to me, is the fact that all artistes recognised that it was the team's concert, and not any particular individual's; thus avoiding any misplaced displays of mastery of their art.

This is my first post on this forum after lurking for a couple of years here :)

Monarchy is shining especially after the Abhishekam!
Abhishek is a class unto himself. The song list is a testimony to his preparation for such a concert.

The venue is on the other side of the Bangalore meridian so I didn't think of going. My loss evidently.

@Rajesh: I hope to keep doing so :)

@Sachi: I took the journey from ECity to Malleswaram. My mom also braved the travel, but the concert made it all worth it!

Heard the Sindhu Bhairavi. What an artiste. I think Abhishek represents the quintessential spirit of the creative genius - in love with God's creation, exploring and embellishing every bit he touches.

It took a few decades after Bhavani came down south in the golden voice of Parveen Sultana for our own wonder kid to take it to the next level of Manodharma. He is ably assisted by a unique violinist and a very competent mridangist (sorry UKS Sir for the term) who have added to the mood of exploration with soft touches and deft strokes.

Ananda Bhairavi. Kamalamba. Begun with huge improvisational flourishes and kaarvais etc. at Sumanasaa

NCB acquitted himself by creating super duper mishra chapu effects.

After an enjoyable treatment of Ananda Bhairavi, pretty much hoisted on the Navavarana song, I was only wondering if Dikshitar ever intended his compositions, full of mythology and esoteric concepts, to be improvised that much. The more deferential and linear treatment we hear usually deliver the sAhitya message very much better.

Well.

Mayamalavagaula sung very well. What a beautiful song by HH JCW. The shloka sung before is from Shivanandalahari with interesting allusions to one's failings:
सदा मोहाटव्यां चरति युवतीनां कुच-गिरौ
नट-त्याशा-शाखा-स्वटति झटिति स्वैरमभित: ।
कपालिन् भिक्षो मे हृदय-कपि-मत्यन्त-चपलं
दृढं भक्त्या बध्‍द्वा शिव भवदधीनं कुरु विभो ॥ २० ॥
