Sri Vijaya Tyagaraja Sangeeta Sabha
Sadguru Tyagarajaswami Aradhanotsavalu
Venue: Shankara Matham, Visakhapatnam
21.1.2007 (Sunday)

Vocal: Manda Sudharani
Violin: Pantula Rama
Mridangam: Nemani Somayajulu

1. gAna sudhArasa pAna niratamu sAma - nATa (A, S)
2. ninnADanEla - kannaDa (A, S)
3. nIvADanE gAna - sAraNga
4. rAma nIyeDa - kharaharapriya (A, N, S)
5. pAhi rAmacaNdra - yadukulakAMbhOji
6. lAli lAliyani jUcErA - khamAs
7. maNgaLaM (pavamAna)

A Very nice concert. (duration: 1 hr 45 min).

Manda Sudharani (MS) commenced the concert with a short alapana followed by the 'gAna sudhArasa pAna niratamu sAma' in nATa. this must be a rare tyagaraja kriti. i never heard before. she ended with a brief kalpana swaram. kannaDa alapana was super. rendition of the kriti and kalpana swaram were very good. this kriti was rendered briskly as it is usually done with kritis in janya ragas of SankarAbharaNa mELa. The swaraprastaram resembled that of MMI. nemani somayajulu's (NS) playing was similar to that of VR. the accompaniment of NS to MS was akin to that of MMI-VR. towards the end, the swaraprastaram was breathtaking. we know that pantula rama is a vocalist, but she plays violin too. her accompaniment was good. though there were couple of lapses while keeping up the pace, overall the accompaniment was very good.

nIvADanE gAna was rendered soulfully. kharahapriya was taken up as the main item. alapana was very good. excellent rendition with neraval at 'tana soukhyamu tAnerugaka'. kalpana swaram was too good and was followed by a very good tani avartanam. after tani avartanam she sang the last charanam of the kriti.

at this point the head of the sabha made few announcements and praised the artists for their performance that far. he also mentioned that sudharani and pantula rama gave several concerts together (vocal-violin). this is my first concert of their combination.

she then sang two kritis before concluding the concert. first one was a moving rendition of 'pAhi rAmacaNdra rAghava -yadukulakAMbhOji.' the rendition reminded me of musiri (i heard only his version).

later she sang 'lAli lAliyani jUcErA' in khamAs followed by mangalam. It was a very good concert. accompanying artists provided wonderful support.
the concert was held in a hall adjacent to the temple (within the premises) which holds about 150. there were people standing outside and behind the last row of chairs we well on that day.

this is the third concert i've attended of sudharani. this time i prepared the songlist and tried to write a little review. i do not have technical knowledge of CM, but am an avid listener.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Ganasudharasa is a composition of Balamurali Krishna.

Divakar,
Please keep writing about your experiences as and when you listen to more concerts. There is no rule that says only those that have technical knowledge have to be reviewers!
It was very heartening to note that more than 150 people attended this concert - will bring hope to people who are all ''doom and gloom'' about the future of CM!

thanks mahesh and lakshmanji for the info and confirmation. since it was tyagaraja aradhana i thought it would be a tyagaraja kriti and i looked up for the same after i got back. couldnt find it. i didnt pay attention to the 'mudra'.

rajesh, i looked up the comp info after i came back and i found that the kriti is in harikAMbhOji, but she sang it in khamAs.

thanks Kji.

Heartening to note Pantula Rama accompanying a contemporary on the violin despite having a vocal career of her own! I can hardly imagine that among most senior vocalists although I do remember BMK accompanying SSI on the viola!

Well , it gets difficult to upload contemporary artists as they become more well known, but then that is the point of all these exercises.
Anyway , here is something ..very short and sweet..

It is just that I move around through many circles - mostly like a loose cannon. My schedule has lots of empty spaces with unprogrammed listening at the homes of various friends-enthusiasts, rasikas, performers, disciples-senior, junior, thathas, paatis, members of the KGS(80s)backbenchers club, critics, spool collectors ....
tricks to make the owners part with the stuff, vary from good old begging to techniques that stop just short of pointing a gun at the head..
:D

Though I gave the address here,to be of use in procuring a CD-if someone wished.
Here is a small 60 sec clip , to help that decision making.

No.The Cd sleeve does not carry that info.
Maybe you can use the above link, which gives an option for contacting the artist for further information.
There is a video interview also there.
But I will stop here.We can continue on the thread dedicated to Panthula.
