Sowmya, Vittal Ramamurthy, Neyveli Narayanan
Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha, Music Academy Mini Hall, Chennai - Jan. 20th

(Tyagaraja Aradhana series, hence all Tyagaraja kritis)

1. Jagadananda karaka - nattai
2. Muripemu galige - Mukhari (r, s)
3. Amma ravamma - Kalyani - Khanda chapu (n - 'tamarasa dala netru...', s)
4. Vinaraadana - Devagandhari (r)
5. Emani pogadutura - veeravasantam (s)
6. Munnu Ravana - Todi - Mishra Jhampa (r, n - 'raja raja...', s, t)
7. Sundara dasaratha nandana - kapi
8. Shobhane (start from anupallavi 'vadanadyuti...') - Pantuvarali (Madhyama sruti) - Utsava Sampradaya keertana
9. Gandhamu puyyaruga - Punnagavarali
10. Patiki Harati - Surutti
11. Jaya Mangalam (start from anupallavi 'karuna rasakshaya') - Ghanta

Mindblowing... absolutely mindblowing concert from start to finish.

Sangita Kalanidhi BMK was a surprise guest, sauntering in at the start of Mukhari and staying until the start of the Todi. This was probably the best phase of the concert, IMO, except perhaps for that sweet mangalam in Ghanta. Sowmya can always be counted on to pull out a few surprise (or not-often-heard) items from her large cache of compositions (I'm told she knows close to 400 of T alone) and this concert fitted that pattern. The Mukhari and Devagandhari alapanas were top-notch, as were the neraval and swaraprastaras in Kalyani. I was kind of hoping that the main piece wouldn't be Todi, but never mind... Munnu Ravana and that neraval at "rAja rAja" amply made up for it. Vittal's raga essays matched Sowmya's explorations. Narayanan is probably one of the finest of contemporary percussionists, the way he anticipates sangatis is wonderful and the way he played for the Punnagavarali piece was so apt and uplifting!

Not sure if any other forum members attended this one, but if you didn't you missed a lovely, lovely concert from Vidushi Sowmya. Vijay, were you there? I have this mental image of you and there was one guy there that kinda fitted that profile... :-)

I was there , from Todi onwards.
Post Concert , As we were talking to the artist, I got introduced to Neyveli Narayanan ,and he flashed a smile .
Oh ! rasika.org.. .. fantastic site... and shook my hands..
He was in great form though , yesterday.
Vittal was his sweet self.

Main artist looked a bit distracted to me , though the post Todi thukkadas were soothing.
Kansen that I am , have alwys felt that the opening line for Munnu Ravana ,has just too many words ...especially when the artist comes to Vibheeshana..
But then I am not complaining. With my kind of scores on the quiz, I cannot afford to.
Wonder Why I felt the shobhane song had such a strong Vasantha touch ?
But everytime she came back to the phrase "Shobhane" , it was divine.

Oh, I was there too... didn't you see the pair of green horns on the guy in the third row who was trying valiantly to keep up with the Mishra Jhampa? And the old stooping white-haired gent with soda-bottle glasses in the back row with an 'archival' air about him was cool-ji! :D;) Post-concert, the greenhorn introduced the archivist to Neyveli Narayanan...
Main artist looked a bit distracted to me...
Cool-ji, u know what... Sowmya said the same thing about you as we were driving back home. "Kulkarni didn't talk much today... he seemed pre-occupied" :)

Alas Kamavardhini, I am in the distant land of the Kalingas where even the odd Odissi performance is hard to come by! If I were in town I suppose I would've shown up - the Mini Hall is a great venue and Sowmya is one artist I did not hear as much as I would've liked to, this season...

Anyway, I am curious to know what mental image my participation in this forum generates! In any case, looks like it needs some revision!

The last few strands which had stubbornly remained Black, have now turned white , after reading this.
I have half a mind to return your stuff , without working on them.
But then I shall give you the benefit of doubt.
:D

Thanks to a mind blowing Maru Behag-Kalavathi, by Parveen -old vintage chennai concert..in your gift pack.
which I am now listening.

Vijay .
The manner in which we met last time in Nungambakkam , My wife still remembers you as the Chap who came like a Spy in an old World war movie ..
suddenly appearing from a dark corner , exchanging a few words for a package and the disappearing.

I would place you as somebody who has the looks of an Aamir Khan and the pep of a Shah Rukh Khan, though.

Time for the srkris to add a place for a picture in member profile  so that there need not be any distorted mental images :)

We used to have that...but I think the mystery adds to allure! Let us all hold on to our mental images and the moment we are confronted with reality will prove a mastercard moment!

Kulkarniji, going by your description of the mental image generated by my posts, I think it is very wise not to reveal my identity and let the illusion continue! The Spy who came in from the cold eh? Awesome...except, it was a rather balmy day!

Yes, it was a rather "khufiya" business that day - hopefully we can meet under better lighting conditions some time! But that reminds me about the cataloging - I had better get to work on that!

Ravi,
Cool has this notion that he can identify a forum fellow without any problem (correct me if I am misquoting you, Cool). I don't know. Ravi, what if modern technology enables us to project images of our imaginings of a particular person? We could then post the real ones along side our imagined images and then find out whose images resemble the real person most!
Also, my husband reminds me of the play we went to in London many years ago(the swan song of John Gilgeud!). A charming play of three pen friends reading the letters they receive, to the audience--a curator of the museum at Cambridge, George Bernard Shaw and an abbess of a convent. They were all on the stage most of the time, each taking turns to read the letters from their friends, revealing all the time that the thoughts they shared was the most important thing. They shared their ideas and enriched each other. The play ends with one of them going to the gates of the nunnery, and--do they meet? I don't remember, and it does not matter...

My point too!
Sometimes, our mental images are way more entertaining than the actual/surface ones!

Munnu Ravana - Todi - Mishra Jhampa (r, n - 'raja raja...', s, t)

isn't this krithi usually sung in Darbar?

Thanks Bharat/Arasi. I havent heard this krithi at all, for some reason, I seemed to think of it as a darbar krithi...I am aware of Mundu Venuka in darbar..having heard TMK and Sanjay sing this krithi several times...
