Every Rasika has their own reasons for attending their favourite musicians' concerts. If knowledge, depth, class, creativity and aesthetic experience are anything to go by, one will certainly not miss a concert such as this. The event was webcast live and though one usually tends to have a diminished experience with this setup, the feel of the concert yesterday was very close to a live experience. At times it even felt like a vocal concert. Technology could have played a small role, but the larger credit goes to the artists on stage.
A beautiful Begada Padam, a majestic Diwjayavanti masterpiece and a Saptaswarakshara Pallavi in Shanmukhapriya were a Rasika's delight. What more could one ask for? If the audience had certain expectations for this concert, they were not only wholly met but far exceeded. The Shanmukhapriya RTP was brilliant, especially the Tanam segment that seemed to weave the traditional and contemporary feel seamlessly. The Thani segment between the percussionists was a rhythmic delight. The RTP and Thani were followed by some lighter pieces. The Desh Tiruppugazh was short and sweet set to tune by Shri Ravikiran himself. Sindubhairavi is a commonly heard raga, but Shri Ravikiran brought out a fresh hue of this raga, highlighting some phrases which seemed to be tailor-made for this instrument. The Thillana was a well-payed tribute to the great composer Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, who is also said to have discovered the thillana as a musical form.
It was a concert of the highest erudition from start to end. If one had to give a title to this concert, a quote from an ardent Rasika would be apt, 'Lost in Sangeetha Pravaham.' Thanks to the organizer and artistes for gifting us a memorable evening.
