Margazhi Maha Utsavam - Why Ragamalikatv?

Post by gajaa »

I’m referring here to the MMU organized by Maximum Media and Subhasri Thanikachalam at Indira Nagar Youth Hostel. For the past few years, this is being telecast on Vijay Super (very few have access to this channel- this is like a low end version of star Vijay where they do reruns of their heritage shows). On top, There is just a 30 min slot on star Vijay again very early in the morning. Moreover, anyone living outside India, hard luck - you will not be able to access this show on TV sat all.

The shows get uploaded only on Ragamalikatv (which is Subhasri’s channel I guess) and you can access it by subscribing and paying 52 USD per year. Compare this to the YUV model that charges just close to 8 or 10 USD per year with a variety of content.

Has anyone here ever subscribed to ragamalikatv and enjoyed the content and quality there ? My guess is that not many are able to catch the show on TV now after the change in channel and the awkward timings. And very few are subscribing to ragamalikatv as well.

Wish subhasri and team can follow the YUV model. Pl kindly don’t come back saying that 52 USD is nothing. Not everyone earns in dollars.

Great observation.
Over a period of time, MMU=Ragamalika TV has marginalised itself. The factors may be many - artistes may have blocked free reruns and the team may have stopped believing in themselves and their content. Or faced a cash crunch due to escalating artiste and studio fees vs. Channel costs.

In these days of Facebook and Youtube Live feeds and archives etc. that is indeed a shame. The MMU captures a live concert with a real audience and a good interactive setting. Must be promoted better!

Or...Maybe like all good things...

Even if they telecast MMU concert in ragamalika th for $52, it isn’t worth not because of the quality of concerts but the content in the site is poor. They didn’t deliver what they promised last time. I remember paying it couple of years ago to watch concerts and all I got was MMU concerts and kids performance from the Cleveland aradhana. They were supposed to showcase many more.

I went by the promo put up by Subhashree but in the end it was a disappointment. Most of the concerts these days are on YouTube or many artists go do fb live. I don’t mean to say give content for free but at least give what you promise for the price one pays

Also apart form margazhi maha utsavam , in parallel we have three to four other channels beaming . The last 2 years I also see doordarshan podigai beaming from vanimahal live concert . Most of 130 crore indians think till say 2014 that TV is the best distribution media to view any content , but nowadays the content from internet is much more better than TV giving more inclusive rasikas.

As a marketing medium TV does not bring musician exclusivity , Extremely thinking and smart musicians like sanjay and abhishek ditched the jaya /vijay / colors /podigai . They say you PAY and COME to concert and I dont need the TV medium anymore. First rule of thumb that successful musicians ask is where is exclusivity for me that facebook gives which TV fails??

yeah, the margazhi programs were telecasted at 6:30am on "Star" Vijay TV in the morning.
due to obvious reasons one cannot sit in front of TV at 6:30am.
above all that it is not reachable to devoted rasikas as online resource at free/affordable cost .
i don't understand purpose of program.

After it became "Star" vijay tv from vijay tv,
it had good slots for cultural programs like carnatic music, upanyasams, harikathas, bhajans and etc.
which were really excellent theme based ones.
many of which was available on youtube, and was removed, once it got merged with star
