Re: song on jesus christ byKJJ
OK - this has turned out to much tougher than I thought it'd be. Mainly because what I know of Christian theology could fit on a very, very tiny pinhead. So, the interpretations are likely to be completely off-base; I am particularly suspicious of the text in red font. Hopefully someone can help with a better interpretation. I am also at a loss to understand the implication of the word in blue in the lyrics.
pallavi
karam tandu kAttaruL EsuvE
karuNAkaranE mAry sutanE
Oh Jesus (EsuvE), please protect (kAttu) and bless (aruL) (me/us) by extending/giving (tandu) your hand (karam)! Oh son (sutanE) of Mary.
anupallavi
Adi manidan sheida pApam pOkka nI anubhavitta
vEdanaiyE ulagil peridu
The distress (vEdanaiyE) you (nI) experienced (anubhavitta) in this world (ulagil) in order to dispel/expiate (pOkka) the sin (pApam) committed (seida) by the first (Adi) humans (manidan) [1] is indeed amazing/stupendous/great (peridE)!
caraNam
manidar kula maNiyAga mari adan maganAga
vAnOrgaL ellOraiyum venRu varasiddhi peTRavarE
bhayam aruL mATRi emmai bhaktarAkki un
pAda paNi seigai aruL enRum parama dayAnidhiyE
Oh Lord who attained (peTRavarE) ascension (varasiddhi) [2] by winning over (venRu) all (ellOraiyum) of the celestials (vAnOrgaL) as (Aga) a gem (maNi) of the human (manida) race (kula), as (Aga) the son (magan) of Mary (mari adan) [3]! Oh supremely (parama) compassionate one (dayAnidhiyE), change (mATRi) (our) fears (bhayam), and making (Akki) us (emmai) devotees (bhaktar), grant (aruL) (us the gift of) service (paNi seigai) at your (un) feet (pAda)!
FOOTNOTES
[1] I think this refers to the original sin of Adam and Eve
[2] No idea how to interpret varasiddhi in this context
[3] mari adan – adan sounds a very disrespectful way of addressing the Virgin, if mari is indeed Mary

@6->rshankar-> Sir, I too tried but gave up. This is not correct Christian theology even.
Jesus is 'Son of God' ( not of 'humanity'). He vanquished the devils ( devils' allurements and challenges- 'celestials?) ( Gospel according to St .Mathew). ( Not your fault. It is a very bad specimen of Christian prayer. )
I thought, a tamil transliteration may help.
Here it is.
-----------------------------------------------------------
( perhaps, the original transliterated version is to be blamed)

vAnOrgal could be Romans rather than celestials

@8-> 'சிந்தை மகிழ்ந்து வானோர் சென்னி மேல் கரம் தூக்க '
'காலைத் தூக்கி நின்றாடும் தெய்வமே ' by Smt.MS

'chinthai makizhnthu vaanor , chenni mel karam thookka'

May I request the admin to change the default font please!
a and o are not sufficiently distinct.

I think iruL instead of aruL makes sense, thank you!
No idea how vAnOrgaL could mean Romans - they must have come by land to Jerusalem, not from the skies. Please help me understand.
IMO, the major issue with this (and many other songs in this genre) is that the composers take ideas that are compatible with certain theologies and try to apply them to others. For example, vAnOrgaL is not compatible with monotheistic Christian theology, if I have understood whatever little I have read/heard.

Also, it was not Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, who ordered the crucifixion but the orthodox clergy of those days. (pharisees). If I remember right, the crowd clamored for punishing Jesus egged on by the priests and Barabbos got reprieve.
We have no problem with new krithis for other religions but one cannot but wish that they stuck to the correct version , instead of borrowing from the spirit of CM.
I hope that Dr.JD was more careful in this respect. He could not have written the lyrics of this song. and to set it in Harikambodhi, the cherished ragam of Thyagaraja Swami!
