Sriram Parthasarathy is disciple of Neyveli Santhanagopalan and I can see lot of influence of his Paramaguru TNS in his alapanas. The voice has got sruti sudham, fexibility, power and because of his training in both the idioms- Hindustani and Carnatic under great Gurus, hard work, his concerts do maintain a good standard. But he is not that frequent in the concert platform - may be because of his tryst with film music. He has got a huge repertoire of Tamizh songs too- a major share from contemporary composers.
Pirai aniyum peruman is a welcome opener- it is rarely sung by any musician other than the composer. TRS used to sing that song. Many songs in the concert- except the sub main and the main -are unheard ones. The Gowda Malhar kriti is exactly in the varnamettu of Sarasamukhi. It is composed by one disciple of Ramana Maharishi visualising Ramanar as the Tiruvannamalai Mountain itself. The song Ezhiludai Hamsanadam by Tanjavur Sankara Iyer, is not on any particular God. It describes the ragam Hamsanadam itself, mentions the swaras in the ragam etc.
Ragams Varali and Keeravani were painted on a wide canvas with the choicest phrases, brighas, long akara sangathis and rounded gamakams reminding me of the alapana style of TNS. The neraval for the tevaram Vaananai was on the lines Veeranai vidamundanai vinnavar dheeranai Tiruvannaamalayanai. His swara prastarams had lot of laya complexities, poruttams, swara sahithya prayogams, etc which were much relishing. The post tani songs had the necessary devotional flavour alongwith the musical import of Sriram.
Mysore Srikanth excelled in his Violin as he always do. His alapanas of Varali and Keeravani brought the raga bhavam with the choicest strokes with the suitable application of thick and thin shades. His reply to the kanakku oriented swaras were spot on. Vijay Natesan embellished the concert with the right volume, variety of strokes, exhuberance and anticipation. S. Karthik, with his long experience gave adequate support and elevated the thani to a much enjoyable affair.
An excellent concert for two hours twenty minutes.
