Re: NZCMS Day 1 -1/6/19 Malladi Brothers
The brothers kicked off the first day of Sangeethothsavam 2019 which is the 20th year of NZCMS. The mics were playing up and SriRaviPrasad couldn't be heard at all. They happily joked their way through it. One saying 'Voice seriyilla and the other replying voice illa, mic than seriyilla'
As the cords and mics were changed, it didn't stop them from belting out a pristine concert. All the early pieces had a token alapana preceding them. Asaveri, Begada and Dhanyasi sitting together was as traditional as it could get, but a delight to hear nevertheless.
The Begada alapana by SriRavi with a reply from young Vittal set up for the beautiful poetry of Spencer Venugopal which the brothers announced was tuned by their Guru. Spencer Venugopal we were told is a prolific contemporary composer in Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit. I've probably learnt and heard his Tamil ones mostly in the concert circuit. Then came an amazing exploration of Kharaharapriya by SriRam Prasad culminating in Thyagaraja's masterpiece 'rAmA neeyeda' I'm sure HE was right there in Auckland, NZ to hear the brothers waxing through the neraval for the pallavi with KS followed by KV Prasad's Thani.
Then the brothers said they were running short of time to sing an RTP and would move onto some 'devotional songs'. That was a fairly heavy-weight thukada section with some rare songs. I'm sorry for the song item Purandara Dasar. You can blame that on spellcheck and it was the first day with a lot of music since. From memory it was 'Antha gAna' My phone reads something else
Oh and I should mention that Dwijavanthi with a little sketch followed by Badhrachala Ramdas, beautiful. They said they have recently organised a Ramadas Jayanthi which they do annually. I'm sure they will unearth many gems from that history book. They set the mood alright for the next 2 days

Yes indeed, Ravi. antaka=yama. So, it's yamA's dhUta-s who have no daya. I should have thought about the spelling before I typed, that too at my age!.

Thank you my friend, but let's read it as 'antakana' as corrected by Ravi.
