I liked the archived concert. The mridangam sounded good. Obviously the single mike is a works-in-progress and won't work as well as in an acoustic studio.

Sriranjani had a graceful fluidity from start to finish. She is a consummate रसोत्पत्तिनिपुणा. Her work in Vachaspati and Reetigowla deserve a careful listen.
Ramakrishnan and Praveen did a great job of accompaniment.

The acoustics of the single Mike concert are much better in person. That webcam mic simply doesn't do it enough justice.

I am now developing a pronounced partially for this type of arrangement. The volume is just right and the sound balance is also natural. With none of those volume hassles and feedback issues. And percussionists play their instruments rather than hit them.

Srinath,
I wonder how a single mic will work in a large hall with a large stage. The challenge will be to have musicians hear themselves and each other despite the large volume in the hall, for which we need monitors. And then the mic has to have enough sensitivity and >180 deg. coverage in the XY plane. Etc.

The Mike at Arkay isn't even used for amplification. The sound is natural.

Large halls? Not sure about that - for a Carnatic concert we do need a good amplification system - for which an expert engineer will be able to answer that much better. But if Western violinists can perform micless in halls, there are ways. For one, I guess all of us have to be really really quiet. It might be counterintuitive to those who keep insisting on more mic volume, but one actually hears better the quieter the ambience gets.

My own experience while arranging several chamber concerts is that musicians always INSIST on mic amplification. Not a single musician likes to perform in a micless concert😀

Musicians love monster volumes. Hence Monster is the top brand in audio cables I think 😄
