The concert of Malladi Brothers conformed to their usual standard of excellence which is steeped in classism, dedication, adherence to sruti, coordination, fidelity to sahithyam and artistry. Their selection of time tested kritis, elaborate alapanas of Poorvikalyani and Bhairavi with brimming manodharmam, characteristic sangatis, rounded gamakams, measured brighas, were highly impressive. The kanada Adi tala varnam is not that frequent in concert platforms. The kriti in Chakravakam of OVK is also a very rare one. It is in Manipravalam with madhyama kala sahityam in Pallavi and Samashti charanam. The volley of kalpana swarams added sheen to the composition.

Mamahridaye in Ritigowla is a TRS favourite and was rendered well. So also Naagagaandhaariraaganuthe brought memoirs of their Guru Nedanurigaru as also Neyyattinkara Vasudevan who used to render the song much soulfully.

The main song in Bhairavi is a composition of Narayana Tirtha- who was Parameshti Guru (Paramaguru’s Guru) of Thyagaraja. This song was tuned by Voletigaru and I had never heard this song. The song carried weight and fitting for the main song in a concert. Detailed neraval on the lines Haricharana Smaranaika Paraayana Janasukhadam Paradeivatam and the volley of mel kala swarams were much relishing. The innumerable bouts of half avartana swarams in Adi 1 kalai underscored their manodharmam and laya prowess. Ater that Annamcharya kriti in Bahudari I left.

V. Sanjeev on the Violin provided very good following and his raga essays were on the lines of the vocalist and his neraval and swara returns were candid. Sumesh Narayanan embellished the concert to a great extent. With the perfect nadam, volume, clarity of strokes, fast rolling fingers, understanding, he followed the kritis admirably. I think the volume got jacked up during thani. Neverthless, the thani with the company of Nerkundram Sankar was very energetic with heavy thunder and lightning, but never an assault on your ears.

An excellent concert for two and half hours.
