Random livestream notes
Of late too many good things have been happening on live stream and many times impossible to catch all of it in one go. Too darn difficult to open a special thread for each and justify the same, with all the attendant paraphernalia of complete list and comments.
Hence a thread dedicated to live stream listening - to make quick comments of what people liked listening via live stream!

Sabhapathikku approach ( as he declared ahead of it - seeking a freedom to deviate) is a refresher. I think in one of his talks he surmised that, it was composed as an inspiration after manasunilpa which begins on the upper stAyi.

The gajAnana kriti in tODI sounds like rAju veTala but is different in many respects especially the beginning. The vINa sound is perfect today and a refreshing difference in an accompaniment role. Anirudh's accompaniment to svaras icing in the cake. dEvagAndhari Alapana was a delight and the kriti (By Spencer Venugopal??) with a mix of caukam and dRta kAla phrases all in one go is a refresher.

Violin single mic. concert by Vid. Shreya Devnath - Vid. Praveen Sparsh on Mridangam.

A very neat recital. rAvE Himagiri (toDI svarajathi), manavinala (nalinakAnti) - good start. Praveen's well balanced Mridangam enhanced the tone of the concert. But their seating might have affected the sound a bit, with toppi picking up more. I think if Praveen were to be on the left ( as viewed from Audience) , Mridangam right side would have a better balance on the mic. pickup.
Barring that a very delightful rendition. His handling of the kappi instrument nevertheless added to the lustre,
The svara rhythmic exchanges for simhendra madyamam , where Praveen lead the idea to be responded by Shreya were interesting. The final koRVai with 3(7),5 , 3(6) , 5, 5, 3(5) , 5, 5, 5 = 84 - where the initial pattern 7, 6, and 5 were executed as kARvais shows her confidence!
Bilahari Alapana felt shorter. naa jivadhara - effective. The Hamir KalyAni tillana is a long time missing one in circulation personally for me - a sweet playing.
Concluded with a mellifluous Rabindra sangeeth and Dikshitar's noTTUsvaram.
A bold and a very successful attempt given the low volume nature of the instrument. The sensitive condenser mic. could be stood projecting from the floor outside the stage as it picked up their foot taps!

Thanks Shanakaran, I will listen to this Violin Mridangam concert for sure.
Your suggestion about the mic to be stood on the floor seems spot on.
Perhaps the biggest resistance to single mic concerts over time will come from the artistes themselves! Everyone seems to have been fed a regular diet of Horlicks and solid mic amplification from their childhood
By the way Shreya and Praveen are a couple... like Charumathi and Anantha.

Well then, tradition in tamizh land for couples, says to the males: "iDam koDEL" - don't yield the left (iDam) side. Or don't yield much room (iDam) you could take it! . As the left side has been yielded by the good lord himself. For a Mridangist it has more meanings - as iDam is time-slice.
I heard in Karnataka they are to be closer to the heart

Once married, the lady's rightful place during the Homa ritual is to the right of the man.
Shiva and Rama and Krishna have their wives on the left side. I think the reason is that they carried weapons/etc. in their right hands. The left hand was free to hold around the wife etc.
I think Shreya and Praveen have figured it out that there is best coordination and communication when they sit so she is on his right.
And so on

A fitting concert for Navarathri by Nisha Rajagopal- her vidwat and dedication infused with manodharmam shining throughout. Started with Amba Souramba of Ponniah Pillai in Arabhi, heard only from Voletigaru, then a neat alapana of Hindolam for Samaganalole of GNB, The highlight was Kambodi alapana for a rarely heard kriti Ananda nadanam adinal Parasakthi- popularised by NCV. Very imaginative swaras appended. Main song was Bhajare rechitha. IN the post tani session, a lilting Bengali bhajan and ksheerabdi kanyakaku. A must hear concert. Link given below.

Nisha learnt when she was young from TRS . Nisha does great homework in song selection . TRS Oda asura kaathu with Vasundhara light breeze is getting steaily to Nisha is my best guess. After all Nisha, Vasundhara and TRS all have rajagOpalan as their last name .I will atleast hear the NCV popularized kambOdhi , i dont even know the song till you wrote . Apart from voleti bit later Aruna Sairam has sung and made Arabhi song Amba sowramba song quite her own. Nisha takes a bit of best shade of Aruna Sairam also. Tx Crama

The kAmbhOdi kRti is beautiful indeed....I have a question...in the segment that describes the accompaniments to the dEvi's naTanam, 'panca bhUtangaL muzhanga', shouldn't the following line be 'gaNangaL pAyndu tALam vazhanga'? She sings it as guNangaL - if that is correct, what does guNangaL mean here?

I can offer an explanation for guNangal.
The song is on Para Shakti. She is also called Prakriti. According to our philosophy, God is Brahman but through his Maya Prakriti, also called Para Shakti, He creates and maintains this world. The gross elements are Pancha Bhutas. The conscious human being is functioning through his Prakriti or an admixture of what are called Gunas. There are three Gunas - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. A relevant shloka from the Bhagavadgita 14th chapter says:
sattvaṁ rajas tama iti
guṇāḥ prakṛti-sambhavāḥ
nibadhnanti mahā-bāho
dehe dehinam avyayam
So although each being has the Parabrahman reflected in his soul, he does not know it but can only experience through Para Shakti the five gross elements and his own psychological make-up called the 3 Gunas.
Now the song refers to Para Shakti sporting in Sacchidananda which is Parabrahman. But her dance is in the manifest creation made up of Pancha Bhutas and beings in the mode of 3 Gunas. Both the gross elements and the beings are all a part of Her dance... In fact She dances through Her creation! So guNangal.

Many in the live stream chat session were not able to identify inta parAkA! Because of that they confuse with jaganmOhini due to rUpaka tALam and then some other song in that rAgA. They lost the raga also because of losing the song.
Many kritis which lived in memory in the form their lyrical / syllable setting are facing a challenge these times.

Excellent initiative Sir. Kudos For some people , what ever existed in the glorious period of CM in the 1940-1950 period does not seem to count at all Funny. After all , they were not diasoora.
Too often, threads on music ( ragam and layam) get side-tracked into expositions of lyrics-grammar, philosophy and mostly irrelevant spiritual stuff of their own interpretation. The 'gaNangaL'- 'guNangaL' stuff is one such. However much Shankarank tries to focus on the music and layam in which he specializes, the pundits of language cannot help bringing in non-musical aspects.
Once again, I warmly welcome the fine idea of @shankarank in starting this thread. In the very near future, all the kutchery in sabaha things will become obsote. and so this initiative by shankarank is actually futuristic and path breaking.
