This site , though it does not give lyrics in devanagari script, has given the transliteration , more nicely. as actually sung by Smt.MS Almost all the songs are there.
we have to get hindi lyrics and then it can be translated more easily.

I am trying to give the lyrics in devanagari script as I remember from the actual song ( obtained by using google input tool). Hindi/Sanskrit scholars in this forum may kindly correct the errors.

Smt.MS birth day (16th September), seems to have come and gone , un-noticed even by rasikas!
May I request you to post the devanagari script lyrics one by one and a rough translation in English? ( Meera-1947) . The sound track is available at

I am trying my best to get the correct devanagari version ( most film sites, give corrupted versions). -but handicapped by my lack of knowledge of Hindi . When it comes to Smt.MS songs in the tamizh and hindi films Meera,
the translator needs a proper mind-set. It is not simply a matter of language and grammar. Sri.Sachi is eminently suited for this work. being a hari-dasa., with exposure to both CM and HM. Moreover, I think, the Hindi of these songs ( dialects in Rajasthan and Gujarath) are having least mixing of persian and arabic words and sounds. Actually, these are in Sanskrit. -more or less. When we think of the sanskrit root words in the songs, the meaning becomes clearer. But then, we need knowledge of literary Sanskrit and Hindi as well. . If we give wrong local language as input, the transliteration also will be wrong. .. That is why, the english translit and devanagari script , available in the web, have so many errors. Some posts, omit entire lines. our aim is not to find the hymns as supposed to have been sung by meerabai but to render them here, as actually sung by Smt.MS in the film . Sri.Sachi will find this blog post to his liking.

Dear Sir,
Each one of these songs have been my favourite for many decades for the tunes and the way in which Smt.MS treats them. In maiyn hari charan, it is ' aao aao aao aao aao aao ji '!
In hari aavan ki avaz ; 'it is 'darti roopa', in baso mere it is 'mora mukuta makarkruthi' , in more tho giridhara gopaal - it is ansuvana jala cheesa cheesa.

They were enchanting even without knowing the meaning. but now much more ravishing!after your translation!
Here comes a very haunting melody,' kunjana vana chadi' ....however much I try to get the exact lyrics as sung by her even in English transliteration, I am unable to get the exact meaning. ...It is nicely structured. ..The distinct section is as usual ..the concluding stanza..'jo thum chaaho ....'.
Pardon me for troubling you but I tried to use google input tool to get at the hindi version but to no avail. I am afraid, it has a lot of errors. None the less, I am giving my humble version here and request you to correct the devanagari ,english and of course the meaning. which seems very poetic and intriguing. .

Thank you, Sir. It makes sense now. I suppose, the lyrics as given are as sung actually, People who know spoken Hindi say, this is not standard Hindi and so unable to help much and that this is dialect as in Rajasthan and Gujarath. This much is enough.

The word in first line is not चाँदी (silver) but छाड़ी (left or abandoned)
Meera feels abandoned by Shyam in the forests,
and doesn't know where to go.
If she had been a fish in water,
she would have touched his feet when he bathed.
If she had been a pearl on a string,
she would have touched his heart when he wore the pearls.
She pines for a glance of him and doesn't know where to go.

udAs/उदास = sad/sorrowful
mAnat nahin man = my mind (man/मन) does not/will not (nahin/नहीं) be placated/appeased/convinced by (mAnat/मानत)
dhIraj/धीरज = solace being offered
taDpat/तड़पत = suffer pangs of agony (துடித்தல்)
