Sriranjani Santhanagopalan, K. Gayathri both gave good recitals for Sivarathri Akhandam @ Arkay and quite a good number of tamizh compositions. Palghat Ramprasad gave another good one. Vidya Kalyanaraman was bit out of form, but later I think during tamizh new year recital she was in good form going by the few initial renditions - me yet to cover the full concert.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
Tis thread is about CM songs ( mostly non-film) in tamilzh and Dr.Pasupathy has shared a fine write up by KALKI on a concert by Madurai Mani Iyer in chennai in Thamizh isai changam. The concert was very special in that all the songs were in thamizh from start to finish.
Many of them were by PAPANASAM sIVAN.
It is in tamizh.
https://s-pasupathy.blogspot.com/2015/06/53.html
KALKI was as we all know, a firm believer in singing classical music in tamizh . in this review, he points out why it is better.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
tamizh songs alright , tamizh music or tamizh isai alright, it would be better to find out who are these "Tamizh rasikas" in the first place? How many sub categories of them are there? What is each of their heritage actually and how have they received it today and how are they carrying it today, understanding it today and seeing it today. etc.?
People who categorize based on power structures , behavioral sciences , and anthropology especially owe us an answer. Like Telugu was the language of composition, because it was a court language! Was Marathi ever a court language - briefly? But was almost forgotten except in one tukkaDA in a bhajan sequence. Guess what - what is more popular now?
Kalki is the smart one saying the obvious yeah? He forgot about what the songs convey though! Especially after he waxed eloquent on mother tongue and intelligibility!

Re: We need more tamil songs!
I’ve been wondering why Sanjay’s all-tamil concert has not been mentioned in this thread. And I’m intrigued that no one has written in with news of his latest announcement:
Happy to announce our sequel to the blockbuster Thamizh classical concert on this World Music Day. Catch me live on December 7 & 8, 2019 at the Music Academy, Chennai

For relevance.. would like to link this presentation that I posted in ragams forum under dEvagAndhari

Seems a new treasure un-earthed although it may not be new to insiders.
This particular one provides immense opportunities to bring out the rAgA and emphasize it with the music of the language as it connects back at the end of the tAlA cycle with an atItam, like many a SrI tyAgarAja kritis.

Yes, I saw that. I was specifically mentioning his all-Tamil concert, and I was surprised that since this “sequel” is relatively fresh news, it hasn’t received any mention on Rasikas (afaik), especially à propos of this topic. I was not finding fault.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
happy to share an article in this thread,
an article by GOWRI RAMNARAYAN
M.S. Subbulakshmi supported Tamil Isai right from the start.
MOODS: M.S. Subbulakshmi captured the electrifying power of Tamil Isai.
``We want more Tamil songs in Carnatic music kutcheris," the protesters announced. Their opponents retorted that Telugu and Sanskrit alone were concert worthy. The Tamil Isai movement in the 1930s and 1940s is a fascinating part of Carnatic music history. Two groups fired salvos in print and on podia. Their metaphors were of Stalin and Hitler from the World War. Both factions agreed that bhava was the soul of music. The pro-Tamil group believed that this could be realised only when the sahitya was in its mother tongue. Tamil kritis were best for Tamil audiences. Faction two insisted that the highest bhava was inherent in the sahitya of the Trinity. Tamil was good just for tailpieces.
M.S. Subbulakshmi supported Tamil Isai right from the start. This strengthened the movement and prevented it from collapsing prematurely. After all, talking about Tamil Isai could make no impact without someone to exemplify its depth, beauty, and emotional power. Who could do it better than M.S.?
But where were the kritis to match those of Tyagaraja or Syama Shastri? Young Subbulakshmi too did not have a repertoire to satisfy the Tamil demands.
Husband Sadasivam decided that Suddhanana Bharati, his associate from the freedom fighting camp, was a good source. His "Arul Purivai" (Hamsadhwani) was as good a launch pad as "Vinayaka Ninnu." His "Jhankara Sruti" (Poorvikalyani) about the cosmic sound could be developed into a major piece. Gopalakrishna Bharati's "Sabhapatikku" had a reformist slant according with his Gandhian ideals.
Papanasam Sivan was close to the family from the time he scored music for Subbulakshmi's first film ``Seva Sadanam," from which "Ma Ramanan" (Hindolam) has survived to this day.
M.S. had great admiration for his simplicity and musicianship. How fortunate one should be to learn compositions from the composer himself, she would say.
Veteran Musiri Subramania Iyer taught her his signature song "Tiruvadi Charanam." Without changing the pathantara, M.S made it her own. The Bharatanatyam performances of Anandhi and Radha, daughters of Kalki and Sadasivam, catalysed the search for more Tamil compositions. The girls had full houses for every show. Why not? M.S. sang for them. That is how "Yaro Ivar Yaro" and "En Palli Kondeerayya" became part of the M.S. repertoire.
Kalki's 1944 vignette describes the ambience at Subbulakshmi's Tamil Isai concert in the December season:
"Kalaitookki" (Yadukulakambodi) in madhyama sruti overwhelmed everyone in the tides of rapture... After the ragam, tanam, pallavi in Karaharapriya came songs on Kannan, Murugan and the charkha. Finally, as she sang Bharatiyar's `Yaamarinda Mozhigalile' (of all the languages we know) in a moving ragamalika, and began `Sentamizh Nadennum' in the high sthayi, the exhilaration of the audience, keeping the beat with their hands, made an unforgettable sight."
Sadasivam worshipped Subramania Bharati. M.S. was fond of recalling how her husband "made me get up and walk out midway through a recital for the then Corporation Radio because the British Raj banned a Bharati song."
Bharati came into Bharatanatyam for the first time when Anandhi and Radha performed "Aduvome Pallu Paduvome." This always received standing ovation, not at the end, but right from the start.
In those days, Subbulakshmi's Tamil songs aroused anticipation also because her face broke into little bits of abhinaya, as in "Adu Raatte" or "Toondirpuzhuvinaipol." Her full-fledged abhinaya for Kalki's "Malai Pozhudinile" became a photo spread in print, a novelty in those times.
The film ``Meera" not only made her a national icon, Kalki's "Katrinile Varum Geetham" became part of M.S. mystique ever after. And can anyone think of M.S. Subbulakshmi without "Kurai Onrum Illai?"
And yet the electrifying power of Tamil Isai in Subbulakshmi's peerless voice was best felt on Saraswati Puja when M.S., haloed by fresh-washed curls, her big pottu aglow, participated in the worship of the huge, unwieldy machines in the press which printed the nationalist weekly Kalki, edited by Kalki Krishnamurti and Sadasivam.
As the smells of printing ink and glue mingled with incense and camphor, M.S. would lose herself in Bharati's "Nenjukku Neediyum," begging the goddess of learning to release the floods of creativity.
As the last high notes rang in the dark hall, a blaze of light suffused the hearts of workers, visitors and family members. The song and the singer became one, indivisible, radiant.

Kothamangalam Seenu was a Carnatic Musician , who gave gramaphone records in classical music and acted in quite a few films too , as a Singing star, in the 1940-1950 decade. ( It may be that he is father of Tambura Artist, who passed away, recently).

"Arunachala Kavi (அருணாசல கவி) (1711 - 1779) was a Tamil poet and a composer of Carnatic music. He was born in Tillaiyadi in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. The three Tamil composers Arunachala Kavi, Muthu Thandavar and Marimutthu Pillai are considered the Tamil Trinity, who contributed to the evolution of Carnatic music. Arunachala Kavi was fluent in Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit. He wrote Rama Natakam, a musical drama based on the Ramayana. The music for this musical was composed by two of Arunachala Kavi's disciples, Kothandarama Iyer and Venkatarama Iyer. The songs contain many Tamil proverbs and sayings. This musical drama was first performed at the Srirangam temple and within a short time it became very popular. Kavirayar was honoured by Maharaja Tulaja, the King of Tanjavur, and by several other patrons of that time. He also composed Seergazhi Sthala Puranam (sirkali), Seergazhi Kovai, Hanumar Pillai Tamil, Ajomukhi Natakam and a few Keertanas. Some of his famous compositions still popular today are Yaro ivar yaro (Bhairavi), Kanden Kanden Sitayai (Vasanta), Ramanai Kannara Kandane (Mohanam).

Shyama Sastry, the great CM composer, has given us 4 or 5 kritis in Tamizh. One of them is 'tharuNam ithammaa'. in gowLipamnthu ragam. This is from sangeethapriya /tribute/shyamkrishna section. (mentioned by uploader as that of GNB. ..Could be wrong)

Re: We need more tamil songs!
MKThyagaraja Bagavathar , as we may know, had a regular training in Carnatic music by Alathur brothers. and his ambition was to give a standard concert in CM. Some of his 78 rpm records , not from films, are really nice and were heard much in radio , in those days. (pre-1950) Raju Asokan's upload of one such MKT song ( Barathy's poem) 'ParukkuLLe Nalla Naadu' ( usually sung in jonpuri) may be of interest.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan and his elder brother Ramaswami Sivan were very great and famous composers and singers, Patnam Subramanya Iyer was a contemporary of Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan. The brothers were also contemporary of the great Tamil Scholar U.V.Swaminatha Iyer.
Vaidyanatha Sivan composed mainly in Telugu and Sanskrit while Ramaswami Sivan, his brother, composed many songs in Tamil.
--------------------------------
We will see some songs of Ramaswami Sivan rendered by DKPttammaL in subsequent posts. As Patnam Subramanya Iyer and Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan and Ramaswami Sivan were contemporaries, and in direct line of disciples of Thyagaraja Swami (second line), we can get good Tamil kritis of Ramaswami Sivan rendered by the greats of previous era.
MS Subbulakshmi-The Poorvikalyani song is Ekkalathilum unai maravadirukka kripai seivay. The composer of the Poorvikalyani kriti is Tiruvarur Ramaswami Pillai.-Purvikalyani-Rupaka-
( this song is in poorvi kalyaNi, BUT the lyrics MAY NOT be of Ramaswami Sivan. ( misattribution?)
Thanks to CRama for the correction.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
The song in the link is in poorvikalyani. But the lyrics given are of another song- that is in Natakurinji. Both are different songs. The Poorvikalyani song is Ekkalathilum unai maravadirukka kripai seivay. The composer of the Poorvikalyani kriti is Tiruvarur Ramaswami Pillai. The composer of the Natakurinji kriti is Ramaswami Sivan.

RSR, Reg 78, the song is in Poorvikalyani. But the lyrics given below are of the Natakuirnji song. Please delete that.
Also correct the lyrics of the song in the link as Ekkalathilum maravadirukka kripai seyvai (Poorvikalyani).

Re: We need more tamil songs!
This is MLV recording of Thiruppavai which was released in LP record.
TNS has rendered concerts of Tiruppavai songs exclusively. I attended one such concert accompanied by Doyen UKS.

Re: We need more tamil songs!
A classic by Subramanya Barathy- rendered superlatively by Smt.MS had been part of a commercial release by Saregama and hence could not be shared in public.
The glad news is that SAREGAMA have donated the entire LP to Youtube and thus it is in public domain now.

The lyrics are given in Tamil at

Preserve and share, please.

"Ariyakkudi’s magic formula had something for everyone. It began with a brisk varnam that served as a nice vocal warm up, followed by an invocation to Lord Ganesha. Songs of various composers across centuries, eulogizing different gods and goddesses, and in varied languages were sung with or without improvisatory solfa syllables, or kalpana swarams. The musician then landed into the hallowed ‘main piece’ that had an elaborate alapana, or sketch, of the raga, followed by the violinist’s impression of the same, the composition, improvisatory techniques such as the neraval and kalpana swarams, and ended with a rhythmic duel of the percussionists known as the Tani-avartanam. This was then followed by smaller songs called tukkadas that included bhajans, familiar songs and finally ended with a brisk thillana. The Academy ratified this new structure after much debate and discussion.
;We see the same sense of proportion in his 78 RPM recordings as well, where Ariyakkudi divides the time between the composition and the improvisatory aspects – choosing either an alapana or fast kalpana swarams. This is illustrated in his following renditions: the famous Tamil composition by Papanasam Sivan in Raga Thodi — ‘Kartikeya Gangeya Gowri Thanaya’; in ‘Kadai Kann’ in the same raga (where he chooses kalpana swarams over alapanas)

Respected Sir, Welcome to this thread.
I request you to remove the tamil -reverse transliteration.
as it is not what the tamizh lyricist would have written.
No offense meant.

மடியோடு தாராகணம் நிறையும் அண்டி

I will add the remaining stanza also soon.
