Here is an attempt to provide the deeply spiritual meaning of this composition that goes well beyond the mere imagery of Siva performing a vigorous form of tANDavam in Chidambaram (explained in the last footnote). I have made minor edits to the lyrics Lakshman-ji had posted way back when.

(He) performed (ADinAr) the dance (naTanam) of bliss/joy (Ananda) in the golden (kanaka) temple hall (sabhaiyil) [1] in an extremely (vegu) refined (nAgarIgamAgavE) manner.

Just as he blessed/promised (aruL seidapaDi) the mighty/famed (mA) ascetic (munikku) one day (munnAL) (in the past) in Mount Kailash (vaDakayilaiyil) [2], (he) came (vandu) without fail (tavarAmal) to the city (patiyil) of cidambaram (tillai) on the auspicious day of guru pUsam (guru pUsattil) in the lunar month (mAdam) of tai [3], (and performed the Dance of Bliss in the golden temple hall in a very refined manner) during the day (pagal) time (nErattil).

As the 8 (ashTa) directions (disaiyum) quaked (giDugiDenga) [4], as the head (talai) of the demon he dances on, muyalakan (sEDan), [5] quivered (naDunga), as the universe (aNDam) shook (adira), as a small amount (tuLi) (of water) spilled (sidara) [6] from the Ganges (gangai) on his head, as the gods (ponnADar) celebrated (koNDADa), as vishNu (gOpAlakRshNan) [7] sings (pADa) in accompaniment, as his matted locks (saDai) bounce (ADa), and as the snake (aravu) spread its hood (paDam) and swayed (ADa), (he performed the Dance of Bliss in the golden temple hall in a very refined manner) to the sorkaTTu, tOm tOm (tOm tOm enRu), knowing that (enRu) he was granting (tandOm) (his audience) the 4 stages of bliss (padavigaL) [8].

[1] sabhai in general means a hall or assembly, but in this context, it refers to the golden hall (porsabhai) in Chidambaram, one of the 5 dancing halls – temples for Siva as the naTarAja mUrti – silver hall in Madurai (veLLi sabhai), copper hall in Nellai (tAmira sabhai), the bejeweled hall in Tiruvalangadu (rattina sabhai), and the hall of pictures in Kutralam (cittira sabhai)
[2] vaDakayilai – the northern ‘Kailash’ – i.e., the one in the Himalayas, and not any other
[3] The lunar month of tai extends from mid Jan to mid Feb
[4] giDugiDu is an onomatopoeic word to describe a fearsome quake
[5] In some versions this word sEDan is replaced by SEshan (AdiSESha) – I think the former is correct
[6] I think the visual here is that even with such powerful dancing, it is so controlled that only a few drops (tuLi) of water spill from the river gangA on his head
[7] The word gOpAlakRshNan serves two purposes – it is the composer’s mudra, and it is also used to denote vishNu
[8] According to Saiva siddhAnta, the four stages of bliss or padavigaL are sAlOkam (existing in the same world as the Lord), samIpam (existing in close proximity to the Lord), sarUpam (assuming the form of the Lord) and sAyujyam (become one with the Lord) – the concept is that if one witnesses the Ananda tANDavam in cidambaram, one has the opportunity to exist in the same world as the Lord, in close proximity to him, imagine dancing as him, and through all this, experience the final bliss of becoming one with him – the ultimate goal of any devotee

The ascetic (actually, there are 2 of them) referred to in the anupallavi are patanjali and vyAghrapAda.
