Shuddha Madhyamam in Gowlipanthu?

Post by a.satya »

Hi everyone,

I was listening to a concert by the late vidwan Sri MS Gopalakrishnan today, where he performed Saint Thyagaraja's Thera Theeyaga Radha.
I have only heard ragam Gowlipanthu presented with prathi madhyamam, but Sri MSG clearly plays it with suddha madhyamam.
Does anyone know why this is so? The use of suddha madhyamam struck me as quite odd, but perhaps that is simply because I am not used to it. I am curious to hear what the respected rasikas here have to say :)

Here is the link to the concert (krithi starts around 23:15):

@Lakshman Can you copy paste this in my gauLipantu thread? Or can the mods move this query over there?

Also please see my post on the phrase of rAgA gauLipantu in the Dikshitar school to get an idea. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33949

Thank you Lakshman!
And I agree with Srinath... perhaps this query is better suited for the Ragas section.

gauLipantu as the name suggests is a relation to gauLa.

gauLipantu was placed in the mALava gauLa janya and many past recordings of kritis with suddha madhyama usage. There are many recordings of past masters singing gauLipantu with suddha madhyama

krishNAnanda mukunda murArE is rendered with suddha madhyama even today

Smt. Vidya Shankar would render 'taruNam IdammA' in suddha madhyama gauLipantu, in a chauka kAlam, in misra cApu, the fast paced Adi taLa version with prati madhayama is told to be based on a thyagaraja kriti which goes 'rAma rAma krishna enirO'.

the kshEtragna padam kuvalayAkshirO has however been rendered with prati madhyama only. one has not heard of any suddha madhyama versions of this padams
