It was almost a packed house waiting for the main artists for almost 30 mins, amidst
an announcement, that the artists were caught in a traffic jam, which made some of us restless and also wonder as to, why the organisers couldn't probably extend the previous concert a bit more.
I was looking forward to hearing the brothers after I had heard their good concert in Jaya TV during the Dec. season.
Finally, after the long wait it was almost a shock to find only one brother rushing to the stage and thankfully the curtains were open almost immediately. Sashikiran started off with his apologies to the members and stated that his brother was down with food poisoning and was indisposed on the way to the concert venue and so, could'nt sing.
I was a bit disappointed initially, since after a long wait, this was seemingly getting even worse with one brother being absent, but having come, I decided to stay for a while.

I should say that the packed house was in for a great musical treat. Despite all the tension and the delayed start, Sashikiran warmed soon after his varnam and the Pantuvarali alapana was breezy, the kriti was well rendered and the niraval and swaras were crisp and in the Ariyakudi mould.
The anandabhairavi piece reminded one of the vintage GNB and was rendered with bhava.

But the highlight of the concert was the Chakaravakam RTP which was par excellence covering all aspects of manodharmam whch the audience lapped up totally. The alapana was very innovative and imaginative and should say one of the best that I heard in recent times. Sanjay's CD for Charsur in the same raga, I imagined would be the ultimate in Chakravakam but after hearing this I was forced to change that view. A rasika near me was telling his wife " thaniyave ivan ivvlavu nalla paaduraane " to which his wife said, pinne enne ivanum child prodigy akkum ". I did'nt know that, I thought Ravikiran was a child prodigy.

Sashikiran's tanam was a shade even better than his alapana. And the pallavi in Khanda triputa talam in 2 kalais was rhythmically tight, and all the mathematical variations were done in the TNS style, which was precise and appreciated by the senior mridangist, who was trying his best to keep pace with the vocalist. throughout. The violinist, however had a tough time, though Sashikiran tried providing a helping hand in many places. V.V. Ravi's alapanas, though had some very chaste and appealing phrases.
The ragamalika swarams were rendered with a lot of feeling and won instantaneous applause.
The tani by Guruvayur Durai showed his class. Trichy Murali was supportive if not in the same league.
The tukkadas were beautifully rendered and were soulful.
Sashikiran has a truly rich voice, which he modulates well to highlight the sahityas and the bhava of the songs very well.
His lower registers are very deep and soothing. I thought he could have tried a little more in the higher octaves.
The yadukulakambhoji piece as a tukkada was a surprise and was rendered very well.
A memorable concert to say the least and one has to say that, I left the auditorium along with several other rasikas, who exclaimed that, this was one of the best in Hamsadhawani this season thus far.
This is my first posting in this forum though I do attend concerts regularly.
I hope to get the feedback from other learned members of this open forum for music lovers.

Indeed, Sh. K N Shashikiran is blessed with a rich, resonating voice.

Here are few other solo tracks of KNS:

It must have been a wonderful treat to the rasikas. It is a rare opportunity to hear a solo recital of KNS.

Sanjay is Sanjay and Sashikiran is Sashikiran. Please do not make comparisons... Listen to everyone and enjoy each artist's style and creativity.
