Dear all,

i played to the vocal recital of smt.sukanyA with AnayAmpatti g.venkatasubramaniam on the violin for nAdopAsanA, on 5-2-07.

she made everybody delve deep in memories of her father, our beloved sangItha kalAnidhi shrI d.k.jayarAman.

the concert began with the varnam sAmi dhayajUda in kEdhAragowla, followed by a melodic vandhanamu of thyAgarAjA in sahAnA.

sArasamukhi of harikEsanallUr shrI muthaiAh bAgavathar in Gowda mlhAr set to rUpaka chApu thAla, rendered in a brisk manner, added pep to the concert.

pApanAsam sivan's (harikAmbOji) "enadhu manam kavalai enum irul sUzhndhAl....." sung in a suitable slow kAlapramANam contained bhAvam enabling the rasika to feel vishrAnthi.

the AlApanA in dhanyAsi, filled with sanchArAs with due kArvai suffixed with nice endings and limited brigAs was really a treat. she articulated the sangathis in thAra sthAyi madhyamam very nicely. a.g.v. reflected her.

dhEva dhEvam bhajE of annamAchAryA in kanda chApu with swarAs sounded a good choice.

[one mama commented after concert like this : "artistes
performing in ttd should try krithis like this instead of
usual venkata ramaNA, therathIyakarAdhA...etc"].

thyAgarAjA's grahabalam Emi (viewers have a look at
http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=18312 in our site) in rEvagupthi pleased the rasikas.

shrI guru gaha (dhEvakriya dhIkshithar--rUpaka chApu ) served as a good contrast and incresed the tempo of concert.

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages..." said william shakespeare....

unnaiyallAl, the kalyAni krithi of sivan, reminding the quote and pleading for mOksha to be free from birth, is a popular thamizh kIrthanam. it also represents adhvaitham by looking into various swarUpAs of devi as one karpagAmbAL.

both sukanya and a.g.v. furnished a well structured AlApanA, niraval in nIyE mInAkshi and swaras in kIzhkAlam and madhyama kAlam.

i played thani in this.

she sang nambi kettavar evarayyA (hindhOLam), manamE gaNamum maravAdhE(bImplas ?) and karuNai dheivamE(sindhu bhairavi) as listener's choice.

Erode Nagaraj.

Nagaraj,
That was a very nice review. Nice to hear about Sukanya's performance.
manamE kaNamum maravAdE jagadISan malar padamE was a song composed by Sri P. Sivan for a movie - I think Smt MSS sang it in the movie Meera...

sArasamukhi of vAsudhEvAchAr in Gowda mlhAr
I think this is a Muthiah Bhagavatar composition.

Crisp review, Nagaraj--true to the spirit but no unnecessary embellishments(flowery language). Hope Sukanya carries her father's tradition into the future!

thank you jayaram for the correction. i have edited.

once, dkj mama sang maname in krishna gana sabha. after singing it, he told " idhu cinemA-la varathukku mindhiyE enakku pApanAsam sivan kitta pAdam undu"
(i learnt it from sivan even before it came in film).

actually, that was a wonderful concert with visAlAkshi viswEshi, shrI valli dhEva sEnApathE and a pallavi in thOdi. accompanists were msg and uks sir.

dear mahakavi, even if want to write in flowery(in the ears?!) and bomb(L)astic language, i can't!

i know very little.

Ahh what a concert that was. The swarams for Valli devasenapathe and MSG's response still ring in my ears!!!

also the thani that follows the natabhairavi, is a wonderful piece in thooL vAdhyam with velvette strokes like thabla....

uks sir demonsrtates and proves thani Avarthanam is an extension of the song...
