Carnatic in Wales?

Hello there - anyone in this community who can sing/play a bit in Cardiff in Wales? I know its a long shot, but who knows.

I found a Bharathanatyam school in Cardiff. Maybe if you contacted them you'll get a few suggestions.

And I live in Liverpool, any concerts in the North-West of England, I will try and attend. But there hasn't been any recently that I know off

I can't come to London every time I want to listen to a concert .. the economics simply doesn't work out.

Hmm, Milapfest - *0151*-707 6645, they are based in Liverpool? Hmm let me see if I can get in touch with them and see if they plan anything in the North-West.

And folks, if you are around London, don't miss Manorama madam's concert. Last time I heard her when she sang for South Indian Soceity, good few years ago. With Balu anna on the violin and Balaji Shankar sir on the mridangam. Sub main was Purvi Kalyani or Panthuvarali [can't remember] and the main item was Mayamalavagowla!!

Unfortunately I wont be able to attend, on the same day Milapfest are having a Santoor concert in Liverpool!

And Jayaram - Don't think i'll be fusion. Full and full carnatic me thinks. She sings very well. Simple,elegant and enjoyable music, no unnecessary complications from her. You wont regret it!! Just watch out for the BVB sec who talks right at the end and shows off!!!

I am getting a bit more involved in organizing CM concerts in London - just got into a local org's committee. Plan is to sponsor a few artistes from India in addition to local ones. (If you know of good artistes in UK outside the London area, pls let me know.)

It would greatly help to tie up with rasikas in other nearby places - both in terms of getting more reach and also to share costs. (This is the model that's used in North America, and worked quite well when I was involved in organizing a few concerts there in the past.)

Can we put together a 'local' group - this could include UK and also other nearby countries such as France, Germany, etc.

Fyi, I heard SP Ramh is scheduled to perform in Paris around Sep-Oct, so I'm trying to see if we can bring him across to UK/London. By taking advantage of such opportunities, we get to hear good artistes, while keeping our costs low.

Ideally, if we can use this forum to exchange info on artistes' movements well in advance, then it would be more feasible to organize concerts in our localities. Your ideas welcome.

Jayaram, I hear that Sowmya is going to be in Europe (not sure about London, I think continental Europe) from end of this month till around April 1st week. She is giving concerts with R. K. Sriram Kumar and Neyveli Narayanan.
Other than that, I think quite a few artists are coming to London this year.

As a concert organiser for more than ten years, I would recommend that it is better to keep such preliminary discussions in e-mails and not in a public forum.

Jayaram, yes it would be best to work with similar minded organisations in other nearby cities and countries so that you can share costs. However, if I was the organiser of the Paris concert, I would probably want your organisation to contribute towards the airfares from India to Europe, not just the Paris-London component (unless the Paris trip has been funded through some government grant).

Yes, the shared-cost model is the norm. In the SP Ramh case, he has a relative in London, so he may be visiting this place any way from Paris. We are just trying to include a concert when he is here.

Oh, I liked it before, and it made an occasional and interesting change from Hindustani, until, one evening in 1995 I saw her give a short performance (she shared the evening with a veena player, who by coincidence, some years later became a good friend of mine) and it was like G force. Knocked back in my seat!

Even from my ignorance I would take the liberty to assert that she is not only the best vocalist in UK, but that she would stand out as a star here in Chennai were she to favour us with her presence.

Her collaboration with Balu Raguraman seemed to me like a musical marriage (no; they are married, but not to each other). I assumed that they went back years (both Bangalorians), and was amazed to find that they met only when he came to London. See has a close working relationship with Bhavani Shankar too. I forecast a tight, brilliant and beautiful musical evening!

And I request that my Namascarams be conveyed to all three of them...

I attended an outstanding concert by Manorama in N R Colony, Bangalore, just recently (Dec 06). We were neighbors in our formative years - I had listened to her practising for hours during those days!

I might as well add Bhavani Shankar and I were classmates in National College, Basavanagudi. Further, Bhavani was on the Mridanga in my wife's Bharatanatya Rangapravesha (along with Sri. Babu Parameswaran).

It IS a small world, indeed!

Jayaram, you are probably aware of a 'London Carnatic Isai Vizha' at the London Sivan Kovil, Lewisham in late April. Sowmya's concert there, is on April 29th. Others performing in the festival (AFAIK) are Bhushany Kalyanaraman, Bombay Jayashri and VK Manimaran. The contact person for this festival is one Dr. Navaratnam. I don't have information yet about concerts elsewhere in the UK and at other venues in London. Will post if I hear of any.
