VK,
Just came across the thread. Thanks a lot. The Tiunelveli concert that I have is of poor quality. You made my day by posting a quality recording! These are from the sixties, seventies?? He was a professor in Delhi University then. What Lakshman had kindly posted were records from the forties. How I wish Coolji would provide us with snippets from AIR and concerts from elsewhere from his golden years (the forties)! After all, he was very much sought after in that time period.
Meena,
Though I had read Sujatha's article--VK had posted it too--the other one was something new to me. I was moved by it. Incidentally, VVS's brother Sunderarajan was a host unto many a stalwart of CM when they went to perform in Thiruananthapuram. He was instrumental in bringing out Swathi Thirunal kritis (SSI's right hand in the effort). His wife Rukmini Sunderarajan was a solid singer in DKP's style.

kiransurya,
VVS took several of the couplets of the kuRaL and composed songs around them. I have heard 'kaRka kasaDaRa kaRka, kaTRapin niRka adaRku thaga' as pallavi line in Kharaharapriya.
KaNNi in a kind of verse. (not kanni which means a maiden). KiLikkaNNi has 'kiLiyE' in them as a refrain. Examples: vaLLikkaNavan pErai; Barati's 'nenjil uramuminRi, nErmai thiRamum inRi...

Ah, if memory serves me right, it was the composition of VVS's cousin Ayya of Trivandrum (a parama rasika, by the way). KANNan varak kANEnE is another one of his that I recall.
Of VVS's own compositions, AdAram nIdAn enRaRindEn, aRindu SaraNaDaindEn is my favorite. eNNi eNNi manam and EnenRu kETpAr illayO are the two rAgamAlikAs he composed among other kritis. For his all bhArathi songs concert at Ettayapuram, he tuned thIrthakkaraiyinilE (mentioned in the Hindu article) which to me brings the essence of the sense of the song. ASai mugam maRandu pOccE, SuTTum vizhi, kaNNan mana nilaiyai (which his sis-in-law Rukmini Sundararajan sang on a record) are bhAvA laden music, doing bhArathi justice...

vasya10,
kArtikEya kamalEkSNa sung by Sri DKJ is by SrI v v SrIvatsA (Secretary of MA) and not SrI v v saDagOpan. The caraNa has the word SrIvatsadAsapOSaka.
Also, the pArthasArathi in madhyamAvathy you are talking about must be by pUcchi SrInivAsa ayyangAr. If it is being sung by Sri VVS, we must hear it.
Please do upload them here. Thank you.

Padren,
Surprise, surprise! As I downloaded the film songs file, when I got to venugAnam, what do I find? VVS singing to the accompaniment of just mridangam! What do you think he is singing? Three songs of Ambujam Krishna of the ones he tuned for Geetha Mala vol:1! Do you think there are other files which may contain more treasures? Reminds me of the way Cool found Bade Gulam's Gayana Samaja concert under a different label!
The year is 1950? 1951? It was the final version of the songs he had tuned, to be sent away to Madurai to Ambujam Krishna. There were a few sessions of recording on a spool to spool--I remember being there at one of those sessions. It was Madurai Krishnaiyyangar on the mridangam, if I am not mistaken. My! All those songs, if only more would surface!
sadA smarAmi sAkEta rAmam is one of my favorites!
Thanks a bundle padren! I am also singing (pADrEn) now

Unfortunately not. I have exhausted VVS collection (the little that I had of this rare music). All are single files and the last one was not indexed (had doubts if it was from a film, hence left blank). Thanks for the clarification.
Absolutely sweet voice:)

CML,
The very first vidwAn to tune the songs of Ambujam Krishna was VVS. Then came the volumes containing SSI's, Musiris, S.Ramanathan's, TNS's and Kedaranathan's tuning. SSI used to say: sadagopan pOLa indappATTugaLukku meTTup pODa muDiyumA? (He was refering to the bhAvA content). Prof Sambamurthy praises VVS's skill in creating the chiTTa swaram for one of the songs in his introduction to the songs.
Lakshman,
I do not have a volume with me here. Could you refer to this in the intro--if you have the first volume with you? I remember his designing the cover of the book as well, and proof reading it meticulously...

Prof. P.Sambamurti wrote in the introduction on Oct 12, 1953 (in volume 1):
It is a matter for joy that more and more women composers are making their appearance in the firmament of Karnatic Music. Srimathi Ambujam Krishna has done well in publishing her compositions in notation. This book will enable the Musical public not onlt to become familiar with her creations but also to appreciate their musical worth. The sahitya as well as the music of the compositions flow in a natural manner. They do not suffer from any artificiality in construction. Sri V.V.Sadagopan, one of our brilliant gayakas has assisted the author in editing this book. He has added some commendable citta svaras to a few pieces. The citta svara appended to the piece in begada raga on page 149 is stuuded with gems of svarakshara.
P.Sambamurti

Hey there is a song on Yamunakalyani tuned by VVS sung be T.M.Krishna on one of his CDs "Ksetra Vaishnava" -- "Jagattinai-Yamunakalyani-Adi" that was an amazing and brilliant way to express the lyrics of Ambujam krishna... the ragam chosen was so apt to bring out the expression of the song...
No wonder VVS is musicians musician
Padren Keep up the good work and thanks you too Lakshman
