The origin of tala or rhythem is rooted in human movements

-the double time of walking

-the triple time of respiration at sleep, when inhalation is twice the

length of exhalation

Once when I was on a train from Silguri to Calcutta, I happened to have the fortune of sleeping next to the loudest snorer one could ever come across. I kept tapping my hands to make sure the interval between the snores was the same and trust me, he kept the rhythm going for an hour. That was my first exposure to rhythm at the cost of a good night's sleep.

Even before walking came the heartbeat.

In fact that came even before legs! And breathing!

Even before humans (who so love to create our gods in our own image, and relate everything in the universe to our selves) came the rhythm of the seasons, of the planet...

If you take this further and further, one can see that periodicity of movement is fundamental to everything. At the extreme, cesium atomic clocks are based on periodic movement at the atomic level. Even at the absolute zero temperature, laws of physics prohibit completely stationary matter. So even there atoms vibrate with a periodicity.

So without rhythm there is nothing.

Even Shruti is only there because of different numbers of vibration, cycles per second. It all meets up in numbers!
