Dr Kanakam's publication entitled, Varṇa Varṇanam" lives up to its apt title- the meaning of the word "varṇanam " in Sanskrit roughly translates into "description." Correspondingly, she has given an apposite description of the chosen 26 compositions featured including appertaining descriptions like brief biographical details of the composers, sources of the sāhitya/ notations (for the benefit of research/ comparisons of interpretations that (pāṭhabhēdha-s) may exist). The precis of the meaning of the sāhitya (lyrics) is given along with the lyrics in dēvanāgarī, Roman English as well as in the native script of the language in which each composition is composed. The notation follows provided in Roman script - tailed by word-to-word meaning of the lyrics. A quick summary of the meaning is also provided for each section of the composition(pallavi, anupallavi, eṭṭugada swara sāhitya, etc.) Apart from providing the lyrics and notations in Roman English, Dr Kanakam has made this publication apt for the current 21st century students by making the publication available in digital format, and also providing śruti-based vocal renditions of all the compositions by reknowed musicians as a support learning resource. All in all, a wholesome and indispensable resource for musicians, dancers, learners, scholars and rasikas alike.
