Re: Brinda Manickavasakan@Vanimahal on Dec 14th ,2024
Brinda Manickavasakan was a prodigy . HEr strength is not to be flashy and take any current greatest import but instead dwell deeply with the focus like her paramaguru Musiri. HEr language enunciation is so good that at no time the music appears lost with at times too many words . The spread of composers was great too
THe start in rare T krithi is well done.BEgaDa is a heavy raga and opens out the threat possibly clears any obstructions . HEr neraval was well done , the swaras were guided in a very known territory , all said she was in the zone of excellence .
Dhanyasi many musicians intentionally give a lighter feel but Brinda sang beautifully the dhanyasi alapana with lot of azhutam. I certainly did not anticipate this krithi paruvam parka and she sang very well. BEgaDa thamizh with a Sanskrit yamunakalyani sequence was very impressive follow up. Great krithi rendition. THe fast filler was not so fast , it would have better if there was few swara rounds for Ritigowlai .She took a rare krithi and rare composer who usually never goes in the fast drop filler before main slot.
Mohanam alapanai was well done along with nice purposeful rendition to give lot of space . The rare krithi kapali was after all not a mylapore krithi but also a mambalam krithi. swaras were restricted but her renditioin so much dense words was well received by me
WIth no worry for time clock if you decide to just sing 4 tukkadas bit meaningless (non Carnatic lite stuff) is one trajectory , but to push herself to sing a crisp 19 mins RTP was well done. ALapana was short and taanam was a clear musiri -Suguna varadachary madhyama kaala rendition . THe swaras in all 4 ragas were well done and with she traversing so well back did create a bit of oomph to me
The clock had 5 mins and Swati tirunal maharajapuram santham rendition of chaliye Kunjan came out well. All said agreat composer spread with few rare compositions were well sung. Bombay Madhavan play bit resembles to more familiar BU Ganesh prasad. lot of sangathi azhuttam and he did up the concert. Both the percussionist played very well, Sumesh shows a lot of charisma like his guru Bhaktavatsalam when he played like the era of Santhanam. Sunil was superb in tani , for lot of songs i felt his volume and/or bass could have been adjusted better
All said Brinda is a brilliant singer. Her strength is to sing in a gay abandon fashion taking quite a lot of creative Pidis .The musiri - Suguna varadachari bhavam is quite intact with Brinda, in this concert the joy of having a long viruththam in between vocal and violin alapana of mohanam is indeed a great one
Overall a very good to excellent concert for near 2 hours concert

Rajesh,
Am I glad that you were at this concert and wrote about it, that too reflecting my feelings about this singer! I have only heard her a few times in person, but how she appeals to me! A youngster with a lot of substance and azhutham to remind me of the old time values in presenting a concert. Yes, above all, the beauty of tamizh and other languages too in her feel for lyrical expression is impressive. Yes, tamizh enunciation is brought to the full in her singing!
paruvam pArka nyAyamA? had lodged itself in my psyche along with the beauty of the rAgA because older folks in my family were singing it. Did they learn it from venerable DKP?? I am not sure. That's how the rAgam too made a deep impression on me. Around that time, VVS had set Bharathi's ethanai kODI inbam to dhanyAsi and the rAgam's impact was doubled in a youngster's mind, though both express philosophical sentiments. It's great that Brinda chose to sing it!
She was also learning from another precious guru, the other Suguna, wasn't she? Before that, as a youngster, from DKP herself, if I am not mistaken. All in all, good khAndAn, good tamizh lyrical consciousness (I concur with you). All items speak of a thoughtful choice too.
Rajesh, am I happy that you are going to a lot of concerts this year! Oh, do go to and review Panthula Rama's concert . I don't know how many concerts she sings this year. The only one in my time frame at the season last year was at Mylapore Fine Arts and how I relished the concert, her husband playing the violin!
Need I say, I am missing Suryaprakash's concert too, and await your review (s).

Arasi,
Chennai atleast lost 3 full days of concerts in the last 15 days due to amruthavarshii downpour. Few days back i went rushing on a working day at 06 40 pm cursing myself that i am 10 mins late to vanimahal to hear Abhishek Raghuram . THe rains were gone that day and in the evening it was fine to hold concert . But i only found the board to say due to inclement weather Abhishek concert is postponed to 27th Dec.
Brinda's prime guru is Suguna Varadachari . She did not learn directly from Suguna purushotaman.

Re: Brinda Manickavasakan@Vanimahal on Dec 14th ,2024
Brinda researches lot of new viruththams , rare compositions especially in thamizh. The sudden drop of viruththam in mohanam was lovely after alapana and then giving violin return is a great move , may be that is either tiruvasagam or tevaram is my best guess. Awaiting some one to clarify the composer
Also forgot to mention that the pallavi composed by Arunprakash does not have the M2 of Shanmughapriya but still the pallavi when sung will be like shanmughapriya is what Brinda told in the microphone.

The Viruththam is a verse from the Athisaya Paththu, the 26th section of the Thiruvaasagam.
எண்ணிலேன் திருநாமம் அஞ்சு எழுத்தும்; என் ஏழைமை அதனாலே
நண்ணிலேன் கலை ஞானிகள்-தம்மொடு;
