Music Academy is certainly one of the best platform for 2 calendar weeks . They bring lot of accompaniments and main artists out of say Non Core Chennai domicile . After vishnudev concert in morning and lunch i wanted to just hear one of the afternoon concert . I joined the most ubiquitous sabha jump route from NGS to Music Academy.
NJ Nandini ,student of Parasalla ponnammal and Vechoor Sankar has a very fluid voice and she carefully sings with a noticeable depth . For a 2 hour concert , musicians push a RTP in academy .It is vidwat sabha then only music academy right.I certainly did not anticipate she dropping such a big mammoth RTP. Also good to see our lalitharam who heard three fourth of this concert , he also heard before kruthi Bhat (VIttal) noon slot which i had to miss. lalitharam says i donot see that much of rasikas . Care to write more @lalitharam
Nandini start in sarasangi was with a brief alapana, was there a brief lathangi missteps in the start . Nandini during swaras gave a start where I noticed a little bit of taking breath getting also to the microphone . Some swara sangathis had the mmi phrases of a typical shankarabharanam . Vasanta alapana and harihara putram was well done not the racy semmangudi rolller coaster but golden girl partial roller coaster . Lovely drop of cintamani showcased the best of her voice, nice shruthi adherence with very nice emote , Nandini romba anubhavinchu paadina , for the lovely shyama sastri eka krithi of cintamani ,she fell at the feet of Devi. The fast filler in niroshtha did not appear as a very noticeable fast filler she did well and then moved on to main
Saveri alapana was crisp and had a very sampradaya paddhati touch. Certainly i did hear touches of the Late Parasala ponnammal there , distinctly emoting with right jeeva pidis .WIth a crisp alapana taanam began , i made up my mind when saveri taanam began will she also sing the magnum opus of including 7 ragas . To the best of my knowledge i heard this pallavi for the first time from a maharajapuram santhanam audio casette. Santhanam never sang ragamaliga taanam for this RTP.
To hear 15 plus minutes of taanam was lovely - i went to Tiruvananthapuram swati tirunal festival , nandini did not come to academy . Nandini had great control and artistry in Taanam and Pallavi where every flip was noticeable with jeeva pidis of that ragam . I particularly liked the dhanyasi , poorvikalyani and intermediate mohanam the most . After nice Pallavi line her lovely madhyamakaalam tour continued so well with 7 swaras with some lovely return by Sruti keeping a sharp shruthi sense .
Lovely behag filler followed and I did not know this irayamman thampi song till i googled to write the review. i did not spot either the thillana ragam or the composer, at a a crucial time one person asked me in side and back what is the ragam . The ragam was gone may be it had a bhageshri tinge . That was a thamizh thillana i dont think it was LGJ or even BMK as there was no sudden balti. If any one posts the thillana ragam and composer details i would be grateful .
Sruthi sarathy played very well especially in RTP her play was sweet with right press and azhuttam. Ks Kalidas student L Subramaniam had nice anticipation and he did pep the concert . The kanjira artist Giridhara prasad was new to me and he had limited role and was most prominent in tani with deft strokes
All said this vidushi NJ Nandini , i can say she is a bit of combo of an amalgam of say Amrutha Venkatesh and Brinda manickavasagam where her voice texture has reached that spot in between the two vidushis(thin and thick extreme) . Her forte is her sweet voice quality and she brings distinct emote for every song with a nice paddhati touch.
For so many years i have not heard any one sing this bhavayami with both taana maliga and swara maliga , she wanted to do that as she wanted to put her signature mudhra that she came from Swati Tirunal land. Academy brings the best cherrypicked numbers in . As i walked out, i came with two feelings ,that Nandini is amazing singer and i also hope she moves her base from Trivandrum to Chennai . I am assuming she gets slots like say Trivandrum navarathri mantapam say from Rama Verma who takes one , gives second to Amrutha Venkatesh and gives third to Nandini , but for better discoverability she still needs to move to Chennai. In Carnatic music ability is some what important but constant discoverability is far more important. Best wishes to Nandini.
