Glad to be back with a fantastic recording in the mellifluous voice of young Semmangudi.
A very rare recording, the last 78 rpm recording of Semmangudi released by HMV in the year 1942. He sings a beautiful composition of Sri Sadashiva Brahmendrar
set to the raga mohanam. Two more maestros,
Palghat Mani Iyer and
Mayavaram Govindaraja Pillai have accompanied the doyen which makes it more delightful. Listen and enjoy to this rare treasure.

Chembai Swamy is the senior most musician among the legendary vocalists born in 1890 -1900 decade ( ARI, MVI, Musiri).
Luckily, though they were famous concert artistes, and except ARI,
had very brief stint in films alao, they left behind a good number of 78 rpm records for posterity. But for these records, possibly in 1930 decade, the younger generation can have no idea of these acclaimed masters.,in their prime.
around 1930...

Description
By
Vintage voices of south India.
This a very rare recording of Chembai in his early 40s with two other maestros, Chowdiah and Palghat Mani.
He sings a beautiful krithi on lord ganesha by Mudduswami dikshithar in the raga Gowlai.
We can also hear chowdiah playing his seven stringed violin which makes this beautiful rendition even more special.
We can also observe that Palghat Mani has equally accompanied him well. This is one of the earliest recording comprising of thani avarthanam of the legend Palghat Mani.
This is indeed a very rare record of three great maestros performing together. This was released in the special LBE (Light Blue) series.
Only South Indian records were pressed in this series and that too of only established and renowned artists like
K. B. Sundarambal, S. G. Kittappa,
Chembai, Musiri, Chittoor Subramaniam Pillai,
Thirupugazh Mani, Palladam Sanjeeva Rao etc

Rabindra Nath Tagore
Sings ‎– Bande Mataram
वन्दे मातरम्
Pathé ‎– 36.250, H. Bose's Record ‎– 36.250
Shellac, 10", 78 RPM, Single Sided
Released: 1912...

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the poem Bande Mataram in 1875.
He was 37 years old at the time and worked
as a deputy collector in the British Government...

In the poem, Chatterjee described
the nation as the mother.
saying,
"I have written this spontaneously
. I may not live to see how it is received,
but this poem will be sung
by every Indian like a mantra in the Vedas."

He included the poem in his novel Anandmath, published in 1882.

In 1896, two years after Chatterjee died, Rabindranath Tagore recited
the poem at the
Indian National Congress's annual convention in Kolkata.

The tradition of singing Vande Mataram (as it was pronounced in Sanskrit) at Congress conventions continued,
and even today it is sung at the
beginning of Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha sessions.
