Re: Lalgudi Krishnan-Vijayalakshmi@Madhuradhwani On Nov 25th,2025
Usually in the last few decades , i take instrumental concerts when there is a feel of too much of vocal and also when i decide to hear 3 or more i pad with one instrumental to avoid excessive vocal overdose.Persoally i feel little restrained violin or flute (in volume and sound) surely helps a lot. Ok all said ,hey it was a Monday at the last minute i planned and MRTS train helped to land near Luz . MRTS helps also to avoid metro menace and madhuradhwani is easy to travel with MRTS during working days.
THe most ubiquitous sabha of late is madhuradhwani . They are into their 15th year margazhi festival , kudos to Arkay Ramakrishnan and Madhuradhwani. Historically sabhas like Chennai(Nungambakkam) Cultural have gone out of radar , WE donot know about the live kutcheri season status of Mudhra , to an extent for sure madhuradhwani has lined up like Mudhra and CCA of 1990s to 2010. Infact afer a week or so madhuradhwani even have 5 concerts starting from morning to evening 2 something like what CCA had been doing. They ensure perpetuation of classical Carnatic in madras.
Lalgudi Jayaraman was once accompanied by Lalgudi Krishnan. I recollect atleast few Indian fine arts concerts in 1990s or may be 1989, i have heard Lalgudi Jayaraman and Krishnan combo. One can say appa's role is taken up by Krishnan and Viji certainly supports very well playing the role of krishnan. These siblings typically take up their appa thillana and varnam for sure. Some varnams of LGJ and also thillana are so rare , infact I dont even know if there is a recording of any vocal rendition that is floating that easily. THe shenjurutti thillana at the end along with the opening asaveri are so aesthetic . Asaveri is an extraordinary ragam to open, there is an inbuilt restraint in that ragam and both the siblings got into their groove and kutcheri kalaikattufied right there with asaveri
I associate to an extent LGJ -MMI Combo and that association came as a ravichandrika drop in #2. Niravadhi sukkhada never sags and the kalapramanam tightness of the rhythm and violin indeed clicked . Neraval and swaras were quickly played , iam not even sure now if there was a neraval in mamava mara gadha. Gurulekha in gowrimanohari was crisp and balanced .
The submain was varali , nice raga that gives a very thicker and rough texture rasa . Blame it on the unique raga swaroopam of varali. The varALi alapana was also significantly played by krishnan , usually submain, most time will be taken by viji, that was not the case. Muthuswami dikshitar krithi of seshachala was intense . Usually neraval by violinist is a quick touch and go , but they took a lot of time to play the neraval in the usual line Aravinda patra nayanam. Swaras had lot of poruttam and they indeed did well
With no filler of either a slow and/or fast they went to madhyamavati alapana. Usually both of them play the gayaki like play but madhyamavati alapana had a high share of brigas and lot of cut sangathis , kind of bit away
from their school . This krithi is seldom taken by most vocalist (the great maharajapuram santhanam used to sing). The main krithi play in madhyamavati was really superb. Swaras were very meticulous.
Tukkadas in neelambari was not sleep inducing , the little fast and the usually rushed thirruppugazh in the ragam of hameer was quite good. THey decided to wrap up with a nice thillana of shenjurutti of their Guru, i wish i hear this rare LGJ shenjurutti in a vocal rendition soon.
VIjay Natesan is an improving mrudangist , he gave right space and did not overbang .It is years since i heard this extraordinary Dr V Suresh. FOr many years his access was restricted to few concerts where he generally plays with Karaikudi Mani. HIs patterns in tani was intensely classical and he never appeared as a upapakkavadhyam pushover. Tani was bit long .
The hall had limited audience and there was a pin drop silence . One has to give a lot of credit to Krishan playing with such finesse and viji giving balanced support . Also nice to see Akkarai Swaminathan dad of akkarai sisters listening with such focus. Did i see SP Ramh also in the audience , may be I did.
For sure the bAni of LGJ is new to many youngsters but there is so much of oomph . If there was a irritation it was during tani almost all the youngsters were putting so heavily the talam and also Krishnan was putting so loudly the taalam , at many places the tani went in background and their talam was in fore ground . I wish Lalgudi and the front few rows ground seated take a little restraint from compositions like asaveri Varanam that has so much focus .
So it is my first concert of 2025 Season , it is my 12th of this year, hope fully i will cover 18 more in the next 8 to 10 weeks
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 15 mins
